The Voice Season 30 delivered an unforgettable night for two Alabama contestants as Joe Henley and Anna McElroy secured their places in the upcoming Live Shows. The November 2 Cut Week episode brought difficult decisions and emotional performances, but the two country singers found different paths to advancement. While McElroy earned an automatic selection from Kelly Clarkson, Henley had to fight for his position with a performance that stunned all four coaches.
The competition introduced its first-ever Cut Week, replacing the traditional Knockout Rounds and Playoffs with a demanding elimination format. Each coach entered the episode with seven remaining contestants but could select only three for guaranteed advancement. Two singers moved forward automatically, while the other five competed for one final position, creating one of the biggest elimination rounds in the show’s history.
Henley, a 19-year-old singer from Grand Bay, Alabama, entered the episode as a promising member of Riley Green’s team. He had previously impressed the coaches during his Blind Audition and continued developing his confidence throughout the Battle Rounds. However, despite his growing popularity, Green did not select him for automatic advancement.
Instead, Green chose 35-year-old Cade Mower from Bluffdale, Utah, and sisters Ferryn and Brinkley Wright, ages 20 and 18, from Sevierville, Tennessee. Their advancement left Henley competing against Allie Rae, Everett Bounds, Keiyana Osmond, and Kayleigh Mathews for the final available position. With only one place remaining, the young Alabama singer faced enormous pressure to deliver another memorable performance.
Henley selected Keith Whitley’s βDon’t Close Your Eyes,β a country classic known for its emotional storytelling and distinctive vocal phrasing. From the opening moments, his rich voice immediately captured the attention of the coaches. Kelly Clarkson reacted with surprise before he had even finished the first line, signaling that the performance was already making a strong impression.
As Henley continued singing, he demonstrated a level of confidence that contrasted with his limited performing experience. The teenager had previously revealed that he had never performed outside his church before appearing on The Voice. However, his natural vocal ability and growing comfort onstage allowed him to connect with the audience while delivering a heartfelt interpretation of the song.
By the end of the performance, all four coaches were on their feet, giving Henley a standing ovation. Host Carson Daly suggested that it might have been the first time that evening every coach had stood for a contestant. Green was particularly impressed by Henley’s ability to capture the distinctive qualities of Keith Whitley’s singing while maintaining his own musical identity.
When Green finally announced his decision, Henley received the news he had been hoping for. The coach praised the teenager’s performance and selected him for the final guaranteed position on Team Riley. The announcement confirmed that Henley would advance alongside Cade Mower and Ferryn and Brinkley Wright, keeping his hopes of winning Season 30 alive.
Meanwhile, 26-year-old Anna McElroy from Mobile, Alabama, enjoyed a less stressful Cut Week experience. Kelly Clarkson selected her as one of Team Kelly’s two automatic advancements alongside 15-year-old Koumba Diallo from California. McElroy expressed gratitude for the confidence her coach had shown in her, while Clarkson explained that the singer’s preparation and previous performances had earned her a place in the next round. Clarkson later selected 13-year-old Brianna Cameron as her third contestant.
With Henley and McElroy now among the 12 coach-selected artists advancing to the Live Shows, Alabama will have two representatives competing for the Season 30 championship. One additional contestant will join them through America’s Cut Week vote, completing the Top 13. The Live Shows begin Monday, November 9, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on NBC, with episodes also available on Peacock. For Henley and McElroy, the next stage offers another opportunity to showcase their talent before a national audience, but Henley’s remarkable standing ovation has already made his advancement one of Cut Week’s most memorable moments.
