A heartbreaking dispute is unfolding in Georgia after a beloved family donkey named HeeHaw was killed during a late-night search for a missing child. The incident has sparked widespread attention because the officer involved and HeeHaw’s owner have given sharply different accounts of what happened inside the family’s pasture.
The incident occurred on August 30 in Polk County, where Cedartown police were assisting with the search for a missing 12-year-old girl. The child was later found safe, but the search ended with the death of the one-year-old miniature donkey at Elsberry Riding and Farm.
According to a newly released report from Officer Trenton Garner, he and other members of the search team were following a trail into the pasture when they encountered HeeHaw. Garner wrote that the donkey charged toward officers and that an attempt to discourage the animal was unsuccessful before he fired, according to the report.
Garner’s report also states that the encounter was captured by a drone being operated by Rockmart firefighters. The report says the footage showed the encounter, making the existence and potential contents of recorded evidence an important part of the ongoing investigation.
HeeHaw’s owner, Hannah Israel, strongly disputes the officer’s description of the animal. She has said HeeHaw was bottle-raised from a very young age, was highly socialized, participated in petting zoos and was accustomed to being around people.
Israel has also questioned why officers entered the pasture and has demanded greater transparency about exactly what happened. She has said she wants to see the available body-camera and other footage so the public can better understand the circumstances surrounding HeeHaw’s death.
The Cedartown Police Department has placed Garner on administrative leave while the incident is investigated. The Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Law Enforcement Division is conducting an outside investigation into the animal’s death.
Police Chief Jamie Newsome previously acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident, saying he was heartbroken by what happened. Authorities have emphasized that the investigation must determine the circumstances before conclusions are reached.
Meanwhile, Israel and supporters of HeeHaw have continued calling for accountability and the release of available footage. A community gathering is planned outside the Polk County Courthouse on September 11, with demonstrators seeking transparency over the shooting and the investigation.
Israel has also urged people not to respond with threats or harassment toward the officer, law enforcement or the family of the missing child. She has emphasized that seeking answers and accountability should not turn into hatred.
For now, the case remains unresolved, with the officer’s report describing an animal he believed posed a threat and the owner describing a gentle, highly socialized family pet. As investigators examine the available evidence, including recorded footage, the central questions surrounding HeeHaw’s death remain under review.
