Koumba Diallo walked onto “The Voice” Season 30 stage at only 15 years old, but it didn’t take long for all four Coaches to realize they were hearing something special. Her powerful performance of Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold” ultimately earned her a four-chair turn.
The Delano, California, teenager is a high school freshman and serves as freshman class president. She also sings in her school choir and told viewers that appearing on “The Voice” was something she had dreamed about since she was a little girl.
Koumba chose an extremely demanding song for her Blind Audition. “Stone Cold” requires both control and power, but the teenager showed enough range and confidence to gradually convince every Coach to enter the battle for her.
Queen Latifah was the first to turn, followed by Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green. Adam Levine waited until near the end of the performance before finally pressing his button, completing the four-chair turn.
Adam was particularly surprised by Koumba’s age. He told her that when he was 15, he was nowhere near the same place developmentally and wondered just how good she could become as she continued growing as a singer.
Queen Latifah was impressed by a different part of Koumba’s voice. She praised her lower register and the way she began the performance before opening up into the bigger sections of the Demi Lovato song.
Koumba then revealed an interesting part of her musical story. She said she started singing when she was around nine years old after entering a pageant. Her mother originally encouraged her to dance or play piano because Koumba had never sung before and wasn’t convinced singing was the right choice. Parade
Instead of giving up, Koumba was determined to prove she could sing. She entered the pageant, won its talent category and also placed Queen—an early sign that her decision to pursue singing might have been the right one.
Riley Green also delivered enormous praise, calling Koumba’s audition one of the most powerful performances he had seen there and telling the teenager that he believed she was going to have a career. Meanwhile, the playful rivalry between Green and Levine added some humor to an otherwise intense four-way coaching battle.
But Kelly Clarkson made one of the night’s strongest pitches. Rather than simply praising Koumba, Kelly connected with what her mother had done by making her prove herself. She explained that the music industry can create self-doubt and stressed the importance of having people around who will remain truthful instead of simply offering praise.
Kelly also drew on her own singing-competition experience. She told Koumba that future success could come down to smart song selection and knowing exactly when to reveal different parts of her voice. After listening to all four Coaches, Koumba finally made her decision: Team Kelly.
Clarkson appeared genuinely surprised and thrilled by the choice. After hearing a voice that sounded far beyond Koumba’s 15 years, Kelly immediately turned her attention toward what could come next, telling her, “Let’s get you to the finale.” Koumba’s journey is only beginning, but earning four chair turns with “Stone Cold” and choosing one of the show’s most experienced Coaches gave the young California singer an unforgettable start to Season 30.
