Nicole Kidman is offering rare insight into how dramatically her life has changed following the end of her nearly two-decade marriage to Keith Urban. Now 59, the Oscar-winning actress admits the future she once imagined for herself looks very different, but she is learning to accept that uncertainty rather than allowing it to close her off from whatever comes next.
Kidman and Urban married in 2006 and spent 19 years together before separating in 2025. Their divorce was finalized in January 2026, bringing an official end to one of entertainment’s longest-running high-profile marriages. The former couple share two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
Kidman initially said very little publicly about the breakup. Earlier this year, she acknowledged that 2025 had been an unusually quiet period for her personally, describing herself as having been “in my shell” while dealing with changes away from the cameras.
Her outlook now appears noticeably different.
In a candid new interview, Kidman acknowledged that she had pictured her future unfolding another way. Instead, she suddenly found herself having to adjust to circumstances she hadn’t anticipated and accept that she couldn’t know exactly what the next stage of her life would look like.
That uncertainty initially left her feeling vulnerable. Ending a marriage after almost 20 years meant letting go not only of the relationship itself but also of assumptions about what the coming years might contain.
Rather than pretending the transition has been simple, Kidman appears increasingly comfortable acknowledging that life sometimes moves in directions people cannot predict.
She also revealed something important about the way she approaches major decisions. Kidman considers herself someone who tends to lead with emotion rather than constantly analyzing everything. That philosophy has shaped both her relationships and the choices she has made throughout her career.
And despite experiencing another painful change in her personal life, she doesn’t want those experiences to make her afraid of taking emotional risks.
Kidman spoke about remaining willing to make mistakes and continuing to approach life with an open heart. For her, becoming vulnerable again carries uncertainty, but completely protecting herself from disappointment would also mean shutting herself off from potentially meaningful experiences.
That attitude is particularly significant considering this was Kidman’s second highly publicized divorce. She was previously married to Tom Cruise, whom she met while making Days of Thunder. They married in 1990 when Kidman was 22 and divorced in 2001.
Looking back now, Kidman says she entered that first marriage because the two had fallen deeply in love. Even when people warned her about how marrying an enormously famous actor might affect her own career, she followed what she felt rather than approaching the relationship strategically.
Decades later, she still seems determined not to abandon that emotional side of herself.
Family has remained particularly important during the transition from her marriage to Urban. When Kidman first publicly addressed the divorce earlier this year, she emphasized that she and Urban would continue to consider themselves a family and that she was grateful for her daughters while everyone moved forward.
Her professional life has also given her something positive to focus on. Kidman has remained exceptionally busy with acting projects, including her reunion with Sandra Bullock for Practical Magic 2, while also spending part of the summer traveling around Europe.
Those travels have revealed a surprisingly carefree side of the normally private actress. Kidman described spending time in places including London, Paris, Portofino and Ibiza, where she sometimes disguises herself with glasses or a dark wig so she can go dancing without immediately being recognized.
The image is considerably different from someone retreating after a difficult year. Instead, Kidman appears to be rediscovering experiences she enjoys while accepting that she doesn’t need to have every part of her future planned.
That may be the biggest change reflected in her latest comments.
After spending nearly two decades expecting one version of her future, Kidman now admits that what lies ahead is far less certain. But rather than seeing that uncertainty only as something frightening, she appears increasingly willing to see possibility in it.
She isn’t revealing private details about what caused her marriage to end, and she has continued emphasizing respect for her family when discussing the divorce publicly. What she is willing to discuss is what came afterward: vulnerability, adjustment and the realization that even carefully imagined futures can unexpectedly change.
At 59, Nicole Kidman may not know exactly what the next chapter will look like. But after one of the biggest personal changes of her life, she seems determined to enter it the same way she says she has approached so many important decisions before—with hope, emotion and an open heart
