“The Voice” Season 30 is already delivering memorable moments before its official premiere, with Kelly Clarkson going to unusual lengths to convince 21-year-old Hazel Gerson to join her team. A preview of the Blind Auditions shows Clarkson battling new Coach Riley Green after both were impressed by the young singer.
Gerson, who is from San Jose, California, stepped onto the stage to perform Alex Clare’s hit “Too Close.” With the Coaches unable to see her during the opening moments, her voice had to do all the work—and it was Clarkson who became the first to turn her chair.
Green soon followed, transforming the audition into a two-Coach competition. That meant Gerson would have a choice to make, and both Coaches immediately began trying to explain why they believed they would be the better person to guide her through the competition.
Green found several reasons to make his case. He joked that Hazel sounded like a Southern name and pointed out her camouflage clothing, suggesting there might already be an unexpected connection between them even though her performance was far from a traditional country audition.
Clarkson took a different approach. She praised the distinctive quality of Gerson’s voice but said she believed there was another level waiting to come out. Rather than simply complimenting what she had already heard, Clarkson talked about helping the singer become more fearless and release even more personality through her performances.
Then Gerson unexpectedly complimented Clarkson’s long hair. What could have been a quick comment immediately became one of the funniest moments of the audition when Clarkson revealed that some of the hair was actually clipped in.
Clarkson suddenly removed a piece of the extension and jokingly offered it to Gerson. She turned the hilarious moment into part of her recruiting pitch, essentially suggesting that a Coach willing to share her hair extensions might be exactly the kind of Coach Gerson needed.
Clarkson wasn’t finished. She also pointed to her Team Kelly jacket as another possible incentive, making the competition increasingly playful. Instead of allowing Clarkson to dominate the recruiting battle, Green responded with his own team merchandise.
Green suggested that Gerson would look good wearing his Team Riley overalls. The exchange quickly became less like a traditional coaching pitch and more like two celebrities jokingly attempting to outdo each other with increasingly unusual offers.
Adam Levine, who had not turned his chair for the performance, watched the entire situation unfold and eventually attempted to restore some order. But he also helped move the audition toward its most important question by asking Gerson which Coach she actually believed was right for her.
Gerson admitted that she normally struggles with decisions, but she teased that this particular choice felt surprisingly easy. The preview deliberately stopped before revealing her final selection, leaving the outcome for the full episode rather than giving away which team she ultimately joins.
The audition offers an early glimpse at the chemistry Season 30 hopes to bring when “The Voice” returns on September 21. With Clarkson and Levine returning alongside first-time Coaches Green and Queen Latifah, Gerson’s two-chair audition shows that the competition between Coaches could be just as entertaining as the performances themselves—and Clarkson may have already produced one of the season’s funniest recruiting tactics before the competition has even officially begun.
