Koumba Diallo walked onto “The Voice” stage at just 15 years old, but it didn’t take long for the Coaches to realize they were listening to someone special. The Delano, California teenager opened the second night of Season 30’s Blind Auditions with Demi Lovato’s difficult ballad “Stone Cold.”
Before her audition, Koumba explained that she had watched “The Voice” since she was a little girl. She currently sings in her school choir and is also the freshman class president, but competing on the show represented a much bigger dream she had been working toward for years.
The song choice was ambitious. Kelly Clarkson immediately recognized just how demanding “Stone Cold” can be, but Koumba showed impressive control as she moved from the quieter opening into the song’s powerful sections.
Queen Latifah was the first Coach to turn her chair. Clarkson followed, then Riley Green joined the battle. Finally, Adam Levine turned near the end, completing an impressive four-chair turn for the 15-year-old.
Levine seemed particularly amazed by Koumba’s age. He told her that what she was already capable of doing at 15 made him wonder how much further she could develop as she got older.
Queen Latifah focused on another part of the performance: Koumba’s lower register. She praised the teenager for beginning down low before showing the bigger parts of her voice, saying the song allowed her to demonstrate different sides of what she could do.
Koumba then revealed an interesting part of her musical story. She said she started singing at around nine years old after entering a pageant. Her mother had initially encouraged her to dance or play piano because Koumba had never sung before, but the youngster insisted that she wanted to sing.
She ended up proving herself in a big way, winning the talent category and also placing as Queen in the pageant. Years later, that determination brought her to “The Voice,” where all four Coaches were now trying to convince her to join their teams.
Riley Green delivered some of the biggest praise of the night, describing Koumba’s audition as the most perfect and powerful performance he had seen on the show up to that point. He also told the teenager that he believed she was going to have a career in music.
But Clarkson made one of the strongest pitches. She explained that she deliberately waited before turning because she knew where the song was heading and wanted to hear whether Koumba could successfully deliver its biggest moments. Clarkson also emphasized her own experience navigating a television singing competition and the importance of choosing the right songs at the right time.
Clarkson’s argument worked. Despite having all four Coaches available to her, Koumba chose Team Kelly, giving Clarkson another powerful young vocalist for Season 30.
At only 15, Koumba has gone from singing in her school choir to earning four chair turns on one of television’s biggest singing competitions. Her “Stone Cold” audition showed plenty of power, but the Coaches appeared equally excited about how much room she still has to grow. Now, with Clarkson guiding her through the competition, Koumba’s remarkable journey is only beginning.
