The Voice Season 30 wasted little time raising the stakes after the Blind Auditions, with Riley Green facing an especially difficult decision in the very first Battle of the season.

Team Riley singers Brandy Neelly and sister duo Ferryn & Brinkley Wright were paired together for a fiery performance of Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” creating a rare two-against-one matchup that allowed all three singers to showcase very different strengths.

Before taking the stage, the singers rehearsed with Riley and country star Carly Pearce, who served as Riley’s guest mentor for the Battle Rounds.

Brandy brought plenty of attitude and a strong, distinctive country voice, while Ferryn and Brinkley relied on the sibling chemistry and close harmonies that originally helped them earn a four-chair turn during the Blind Auditions.

Once the performance began, the three voices came together surprisingly well.

Kelly Clarkson praised Brandy for managing to stand out despite competing against a duo, while also pointing out just how unusually tight Ferryn and Brinkley sounded together. She admitted that she would lean slightly toward the sisters if the choice were hers.

Adam Levine also praised the three-part harmony and recognized how difficult Brandy’s position was, while Queen Latifah and Adam ultimately avoided telling Riley exactly whom he should choose.

That left the first-time coach to make the decision himself.

Riley praised all three singers for the energy and attitude they brought to the performance and admitted that he knew the decision would be painful regardless of the outcome.

Ferryn and Brinkley had an obvious advantage in their natural sibling harmonies, but Riley jokingly pointed out that Brandy had an advantage of her own — she had previously baked him a birthday cake.

When the joking ended, however, Riley had to make the call.

He chose Ferryn & Brinkley as the winners of the Battle, sending the sisters forward while ending Brandy’s journey on the show.

Riley later explained that the decision came down partly to what makes the sisters different from everyone else remaining in the competition. Ferryn and Brinkley are the season’s only duo, and he believes their ability to sing individually while producing exceptionally tight harmonies together gives them a real chance of surviving the difficult rounds ahead.

Brandy’s elimination was still a painful one for Riley, who praised her talent and said he enjoyed working with her.

But with the new Cut Week waiting after the Battles, Riley is already thinking several rounds ahead.

And after entering the season with one of the Blind Auditions’ earliest four-chair turns, Ferryn and Brinkley have now cleared their first major obstacle — proving that their harmonies may be one of Team Riley’s strongest weapons.
