Kayleigh Mathews thought her Voice journey might be over.
Seconds later, she suddenly had two coaches fighting to keep her in the competition.
The 31-year-old Tucson country singer became the center of Season 30’s first dramatic double-Steal showdown after Queen Latifah paired her against fellow four-chair standout Lillie Kolich during the Battle Rounds.
And the matchup was every bit as difficult as it looked on paper.
Kayleigh and Lillie performed Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” working with Queen and legendary Battle advisor Patti LaBelle before taking the stage.

Both singers had earned four-chair turns during the Blind Auditions, meaning Queen had deliberately placed two of her most sought-after artists against one another.
The performance left the coaches impressed.
Kelly Clarkson called their version one of her favorite performances of the song and described the duet as “breathtakingly beautiful.”
Riley Green admitted he didn’t envy Queen’s position.
His message was essentially simple: Queen had won so many talented singers during the Blind Auditions that she now had to deal with the painful consequence of making them compete against one another.
Adam Levine leaned toward Lillie.
Kelly leaned slightly toward Kayleigh.
Queen ultimately had to decide for herself.
She selected Lillie Kolich, explaining that there was something especially unique about what Lillie brought to the performance.
For a brief moment, Kayleigh appeared to be heading home.
Then Kelly Clarkson hit her button.
STEAL.
Kelly barely had time to celebrate before Riley Green hit his own button too.
Suddenly Kayleigh wasn’t eliminated at all.
She had another decision to make.
And once again, two coaches desperately wanted the country singer on their team.
Kelly immediately reminded Kayleigh of one important detail.
She had pressed her Steal button first.
Kelly also pointed toward her own experience as a competition-show winner, arguing that she understood what it takes to navigate this kind of contest and could help Kayleigh move forward strategically.
Her pitch carried another layer because Kelly had already fought for Kayleigh during the Blind Auditions — only to lose her to Queen Latifah.
Riley wasn’t about to let Kelly have her easily.
He reminded Kayleigh that he had been a major supporter from her very first audition and had already tried everything — including his memorable duck-call antics — to convince her to join him.

Then he made his strongest argument.
Riley suggested that the other coaches didn’t want Kayleigh joining his team because they believed the combination could become dangerous later in the competition.
His message was essentially: come to Team Riley and try to win the whole thing together.
The situation was especially interesting because Kayleigh had already rejected Riley once.
During her Blind Audition, Kayleigh performed Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name” and turned all four chairs.
For a country singer, Riley appeared to be the natural choice.
Instead, Kayleigh surprised everyone by following her instincts and choosing Queen Latifah.
Now fate has handed Riley a second opportunity.
But Kelly wants her just as badly.
The double Steal also carries enormous strategic importance because each coach only has one Steal during the Battles.
Using it on Kayleigh means Kelly and Riley both decided she was valuable enough to risk their only rescue opportunity of the entire round.
And that may be the biggest compliment Kayleigh received all night.
She lost her Battle.

But instead of leaving the competition, she watched two superstar coaches immediately fight over her.
The October 12 episode then delivered one final twist.
It didn’t reveal Kayleigh’s choice.
The show cut away on a cliffhanger, saving her decision between Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green for the next Battle episode.
That means one of Season 30’s most intriguing coaching decisions is still hanging in the balance.
Kelly offers competition-show experience, versatility and the chance to work with a coach who has been trying to land Kayleigh from the beginning.
Riley offers a direct connection to the country world Kayleigh comes from — and another opportunity to make the pairing that many expected during her Blind Audition finally happen.
Queen Latifah may have ended Kayleigh’s first chapter.
But Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green immediately opened another.
Now the question is simple:
Team Kelly or Team Riley?
