Before there was a fairytale wedding, chart-topping duets, and adorable blended-family moments — there was heartbreak, hesitation, and a near-miss that could’ve changed everything.
In a candid new interview, Gwen Stefani is pulling back the curtain on the rocky beginnings of her now-beloved relationship with country superstar Blake Shelton, revealing that she once told him to walk away — for good.
“This Is Not Happening Anymore…”
“We had just met, and it was chaos,” Stefani shared. “Both of our lives were in complete turmoil, all over the ground. Nothing could save us at that point.”
In the summer of 2015, both Stefani and Shelton were freshly reeling from high-profile divorces — hers from Gavin Rossdale, and his from Miranda Lambert. What began as shared grief between two coaches on The Voice quickly turned into something deeper… and terrifying.
“There was a point where I was like, ‘I can’t even talk to you. This is insane. I already have enough problems. This is not happening anymore. We’re not going to text or nothing,’” Stefani admitted.
But Blake Didn’t Walk Away

Instead of pulling back, Blake Shelton stayed close. Quietly, gently. No pressure — just presence.
“He sent me this half-written song,” Gwen recalled. “He said, ‘Help me finish this.’” That song would become Go Ahead and Break My Heart, released in 2016 — a vulnerable, soul-baring duet that became the couple’s first true collaboration… and the turning point of their relationship.
“We weren’t even in the same room. We wrote the verses back and forth over text,” she said. “It was like we were writing letters to each other, in song.”
“God Putting Blake in My Life Was a Miracle”
Their bond, once fragile, only grew stronger — rooted in music, mutual heartbreak, and a kind of raw honesty neither expected.
“I think he really wanted to impress me,” Gwen smiled, reflecting on Blake’s return to songwriting for her. “That’s where I get my fulfillment. Writing songs. That’s how I find my worth. And suddenly, we were writing our story together.”
What followed was a whirlwind: public confirmation in late 2015, engagement in 2020, and a gorgeous wedding in 2021. Now, three years into marriage, Gwen says she finally understands what real love feels like.
“I wanted that kind of love since I was a little girl. What my parents had. Marriage. Family. Babies. But when my first marriage ended, that dream shattered. Blake was the miracle that helped me dream again.”
A Love She Never Saw Coming

Today, Gwen and Blake are more than just music icons — they’re a testament to second chances and the beauty of letting someone love you through the fear.
“I almost missed out on the love of my life,” Gwen admits. “But I’m so glad I didn’t.”
From broken hearts to sacred vows, their story is a reminder that sometimes… the greatest love stories begin right when we think love is over.
