The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards brought together several major voices to celebrate the legacy of George Michael, but by the time the tribute reached its finale, Adam Lambert had become one of the night’s biggest talking points.
The special performance took place September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, marking 10 years since Michael’s death and celebrating the enormous influence his music continues to have.
Orville Peck introduced the tribute before Sombr opened the medley with “Faith” and “Father Figure,” two songs from Michael’s hugely successful 1987 solo album Faith.
RAYE followed with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” while Teddy Swims took on one of Michael’s most recognizable recordings, “Careless Whisper.”
Those performances had already given the audience plenty of nostalgia, but MTV had kept one major name out of its advance announcement.
Adam Lambert suddenly appeared for the finale.
Dressed for the dramatic entrance and immediately taking command of the stage, Lambert launched into “Freedom! ’90,” the song chosen to close the George Michael tribute.
Lambert’s powerful vocal style was particularly well suited to the track. Rather than trying to imitate Michael note for note, he brought his own theatrical energy and unmistakable range to the performance.
The audience responded almost immediately. Several people inside the Peacock Theater were seen getting to their feet as Lambert drove the song toward its finale.
He was eventually joined by MNEK, MEEK and Saint Harison, turning the final section into a larger celebration before the entire George Michael tribute came to an end.
The response afterward was particularly notable because the tribute lineup had generated debate even before the ceremony. Some viewers had questioned whether the initially announced performers were the right choices to represent Michael’s musical and cultural legacy.
Lambert’s unannounced appearance changed much of that conversation. One major review singled him out as the performer who brought new energy to the tribute, praising both his voice and the choice to give him “Freedom! ’90.”
For Lambert, performing a George Michael song carried personal meaning as well. Before the show, the 44-year-old explained that Michael had been one of the male singers who influenced him most while he was growing up, alongside Michael Jackson.
Lambert particularly admired Michael not just as a vocalist, but as a songwriter and producer. He also spoke about the confidence with which Michael eventually publicly embraced his identity, something Lambert remembered as especially meaningful.
That history made “Freedom! ’90” an especially fitting song for Lambert to perform. Decades after Michael turned it into one of his defining statements of artistic independence, another singer heavily influenced by him was standing on the VMA stage bringing it to a new generation.
