The Voice Season 30 wasted almost no time moving from the Blind Auditions into the Battles.
After all four coaches finally completed their 12-artist teams on October 6, viewers immediately watched Riley Green make the season’s first painful elimination.
Riley paired Nashville singer Brandy Neelly against sister duo Ferryn & Brinkley Wright for Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart.”
With Carly Pearce serving as Riley’s Battle advisor, all three singers received praise — but Riley eventually selected Ferryn and Brinkley to move forward. Brandy became the first artist eliminated during Season 30’s Battles.
The decision sparked debate because Brandy had been asked to compete alone against sisters who had years of experience blending their voices together.
Riley acknowledged how difficult the matchup was, but said Ferryn and Brinkley’s unusually tight sibling harmonies — along with their status as the competition’s only duo — made them particularly valuable heading deeper into the season.
Now the Battles are expanding dramatically.
Instead of waiting another full week after the first matchup, The Voice will air Battle episodes on Monday, October 12, and Tuesday, October 13, both beginning at 8 p.m. on NBC.
And several of the announced pairings immediately stand out.
On Team Riley, Monday will feature Joe Henley vs. Kenna Elpers.
Joe, 19, turned two chairs with Travis Tritt’s “Anymore” before choosing Riley over Kelly Clarkson, while Kenna also earned two turns during her Blind Audition with “White Horse.”
Riley’s second Monday matchup will be Caroline Alexis vs. Everett Bounds.
Both singers were one-chair turns for Riley during the Blinds, which could make this one especially difficult because neither artist had another coach fighting for them when they originally entered the competition.
Queen Latifah has two particularly intriguing Battles scheduled Monday.
Alt Bloom will face Morgan Lett, while two four-chair standouts — Kayleigh Mathews and Lillie Kolich — will go head-to-head.
That means one of Queen’s most sought-after Blind Audition artists could immediately find themselves vulnerable unless another coach uses a Steal.
Kelly Clarkson will send Koumba Diallo against Lance Tenazas.
Koumba was one of Season 30’s biggest Blind Audition moments after turning all four chairs with Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold,” while Lance earned two turns with “Risk It All.”
Adam Levine’s Monday matchup will put Connor Closs against Cal Cook.
Connor earned turns from Adam and Riley with Hozier’s “Too Sweet” before choosing Adam, while Cal received only Adam’s chair for his Blind Audition.
Then the Battles continue Tuesday with another group of potentially difficult decisions.
Queen Latifah will pair Big Country vs. Luke Cope and Marcus Ladden Jr. vs. Chari.
Chari enters that Battle as a four-chair turn, while Marcus earned two turns during the Blinds.
Kelly’s Tuesday matchups may be equally competitive.
Hazel Gerson will face four-chair turn Nina Howland, while Johnny Kapua will battle Anna McElroy.
Nina became one of the final major standouts of the Blind Auditions with Bonnie Raitt’s “Love Me Like a Man,” making her Battle against Hazel one of the week’s most interesting pairings.
Riley will also return Tuesday with Keiyana Osmond vs. Brendan Coulter.
Keiyana earned only Riley’s chair with her distinctive version of “Kiss Me,” while Brendan turned both Riley and Adam with Jelly Roll’s “Liar.”
And Adam Levine may have one of the most closely watched Battles of the week:
Luke Curran vs. Evan James.
Evan recently earned a three-chair turn with Morgan Wallen’s “Wasted on You” before surprising the coaches by choosing Adam instead of country coach Riley Green.
Now, almost immediately after making that unexpected decision, he will have to prove Adam was the right choice.
This season’s Battle format also brings back the celebrity advisors.
Riley is working with Carly Pearce, Kelly Clarkson with Ariana DeBose, Queen Latifah with Patti LaBelle, and Adam Levine with Alex Warren. Each coach also has a Steal available during the Battles, meaning losing a matchup doesn’t always automatically mean going home.
The Battles are only the beginning of the pressure.
Artists who survive will eventually face Season 30’s new Cut Week, where coaches will dramatically reduce their teams before the live shows.
That makes every decision increasingly important.
Ferryn and Brinkley have already survived the first brutal cut.
Brandy Neelly became the first casualty.
And with 11 more Battles scheduled across Monday and Tuesday, Season 30 is about to start sending many more singers home — while a few lucky artists could get a second life through a Steal.
