Michigan singer Evan James seemed destined for Team Riley Green after walking onto The Voice stage with one of Morgan Wallen’s biggest country hits.
Instead, the 22-year-old surprised the coaches by choosing Adam Levine — and the reasoning behind that decision may have been far more strategic than viewers realized.
Evan performed “Wasted on You” during the final Blind Auditions of Season 30, putting a soulful spin on the Morgan Wallen hit.
As the song built toward its final chorus, Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green and Adam Levine all turned their chairs, giving Evan a three-chair turn. Queen Latifah could not join the fight because her team was already full.
The response from the coaches was immediately positive.
Kelly praised Evan for taking such a recognizable song and making it sound like his own, comparing parts of his vocal style to Rascal Flatts frontman Gary LeVox while also hearing an R&B influence.
Riley was impressed by how much Evan grew during the performance.
He told Evan that although he could sense some nerves early on, by the end he had reached a point where he truly seemed to “own the song.”
Some viewers went even further.
Reaction online included fans saying they preferred Evan’s rendition to Morgan Wallen’s original — high praise considering how closely associated the song is with Wallen. That reaction represents viewer opinion, rather than a judgment from the coaches themselves.
With Riley sitting directly in front of him, the choice seemed obvious.
Riley is Season 30’s dedicated country coach, and country singers repeatedly gravitated toward his team throughout the Blind Auditions.
But Adam realized that could also become a weakness.
He pointed out that Riley already had numerous country singers competing for attention on his roster.
Kelly had country-influenced performers too.
Adam argued that Evan could do something very different by joining him.

Rather than becoming another country singer on a country-heavy team, Evan could occupy a much clearer space on Team Adam.
Adam told him he believed Evan would “definitely stand out” as the competition progressed and encouraged him to think strategically about where he would have the best opportunity to develop.
That argument appears to have landed.
When host Carson Daly asked for his decision, Evan acknowledged that he was about to take a risk.
“I think I’m going to take a leap of faith here,” he said before choosing Adam Levine.
Even Adam looked surprised.
The longtime coach admitted he was thrilled to finally land a strong country singer after repeatedly watching artists from the genre choose Riley instead.
But there may have been another, much lighter reason behind Evan’s decision as well.
After the episode aired, Evan joked on TikTok that his aunt is a huge Maroon 5 fan, adding another funny layer to why Team Adam may have felt right.
The strategic explanation, however, may prove much more important once the competition gets tougher.
On Team Riley, Evan would have been surrounded by several singers competing in a similar country lane.
With Adam, his country-soul sound gives him something immediately recognizable within the team.
That doesn’t guarantee an easier path.
But it does explain why Evan was willing to pass on the coach everyone expected him to choose.
What initially looked like a shocking decision may actually have been a calculated one: go where his sound would be different instead of where it would be expected.
Now Evan James enters the next stage of The Voice as one of Team Adam’s most unusual artists — and the “leap of faith” that shocked the room could end up becoming one of the most important decisions of his season.
