The vigil was held at the corner of 20th and Durfor Streets, close to the place where Billy was shot in the early hours of June 6. What had been an ordinary night out with friends ended with his family facing a loss that no parent or sibling should ever have to carry.
Billy had been walking home after watching basketball at a neighborhood bar when two hooded suspects allegedly stole his iPhone. Police said the encounter turned deadly moments later, leaving Billy critically wounded just steps from the home where his loved ones were waiting.
At the vigil, candles, flowers, and balloons filled the corner as friends, neighbors, and strangers stood together in silence and grief. The gathering became a place for the community to mourn, but also a place where Billy’s family tried to put their pain into words.
His father, Bill Schmidt, spoke to the crowd about the son he called his best friend. Through heartbreak, he asked how he was supposed to watch the Eagles play without Billy beside him.
