Blake Shelton is officially returning to “The Voice” more than three years after leaving the NBC singing competition. The surprise was revealed in a new teaser promoting “The Voice: 30th Season Celebration,” a special marking 15 years and 30 seasons of the long-running series.
NBC teased Shelton’s comeback with the announcement “Blake is back!” while referring to the country star as the show’s familiar “old sheriff.” The clip immediately generated excitement among longtime viewers who have missed Shelton’s humor and competitive personality.
The footage shows Shelton returning to the familiar “Voice” set and embracing Adam Levine, his longtime friend and former coaching rival. He is also seen sitting down with Levine and Gwen Stefani as they look back on the show’s history.
Shelton was one of the four original Coaches when “The Voice” premiered in April 2011. He shared the red chairs with Levine, Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green and eventually became the longest-serving Coach in the program’s history.
After competing for 23 seasons, Shelton stepped away following the Season 23 finale in May 2023. His departure ended an extraordinary uninterrupted run that had made him one of the personalities most closely associated with “The Voice.”
His record on the competition was equally impressive. Shelton coached nine winning Artists during his time on the show, more than any other Coach, and his playful rivalry with Levine became one of the program’s signature relationships.
“The Voice” also changed Shelton’s personal life. He met Gwen Stefani through the series after she joined as a Coach, and their friendship eventually developed into a relationship. Shelton and Stefani married in 2021.
The Season 30 celebration brings Shelton together with several other important figures from the show’s history. Carson Daly sits down with Shelton, Levine, CeeLo Green, Kelly Clarkson and Stefani, along with new Coaches Queen Latifah and Riley Green, to revisit memorable moments and discuss how the competition has evolved.
Fans reacting to Shelton’s return quickly began asking whether the announcement meant he might reclaim his red chair permanently. Some viewers said they would love to see Shelton and Levine competing against each other again, while others simply celebrated seeing him associated with the program once more.
For now, however, Shelton’s appearance should not be confused with a confirmed return as a Season 30 Coach. NBC’s official Season 30 lineup consists of returning Coaches Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson alongside first-time Coaches Queen Latifah and Riley Green.
Season 30 itself will bring several other major changes, including six weeks of live shows and more opportunities for viewers to influence the competition. The Blind Auditions are also replacing the familiar Block with a new First-In Button, adding another strategic element for the Coaches.
“The Voice: 30th Season Celebration” airs September 17 on NBC, followed by the official Season 30 premiere on Monday, September 21 at 8 p.m. ET. Whether Shelton ever returns for another full season remains unanswered, but for longtime fans, seeing the winningest Coach in the show’s history back on the set is already a significant part of the milestone celebration.
