When fans learned that Riley Green would be joining Season 30 of The Voice, many were surprised.
Now, the country star is revealing how the opportunity came together — and why the legacy of Blake Shelton may have played a bigger role than fans realized.
Speaking about his journey to the famous red chair, Riley explained that conversations about his possible involvement began long before anything became official. At first, there was simply interest from the show’s producers, with Riley emerging as one of several names being considered for the coaching panel.
Things began to change after a series of high-profile appearances that allowed television executives to see a different side of him.
One of the key moments came during an appearance at the Grammy Museum, where Riley participated in a question-and-answer session. According to the singer, the event helped him build a strong connection with people associated with the show and demonstrated the personality he could bring to television.
Another important appearance followed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where Riley’s visibility continued to grow.

According to Riley, the show wanted someone who could bring some of the same energy that Blake Shelton delivered during his legendary run on The Voice. The new coach will join a star-studded Season 30 panel that includes returning favorites Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine, along with newcomer Queen Latifah.
Although filming has not yet begun, Riley admitted he is both excited and curious about what lies ahead. While he understands how the competition works from a viewer’s perspective, he joked that he still does not fully know what to expect once he is actually sitting in the chair.
One person who has already offered support is Kelly Clarkson.
Riley revealed that Kelly personally reached out to him and welcomed him to the show. As a longtime supporter of country music, Kelly was already familiar with Riley’s work, making the encouragement especially meaningful.
Outside of television, Riley is also preparing for the release of his upcoming album, That’s Just Me, which includes the much-discussed song “Think As You Drunk.” The project also features archival vocals from late country legend Toby Keith, a collaboration that Riley says received the blessing of Keith’s family.
Despite his growing success, Riley says he still feels driven to keep pushing himself.
For him, every new opportunity brings the challenge of growing bigger, reaching more listeners, and continuing to improve as an artist.
Now, with a new album on the way and a coaching role on one of television’s biggest music competitions, Riley Green is entering one of the most important chapters of his career.
