Kayleigh Mathews thought her Voice journey might be over for only a few seconds before two coaches suddenly gave her another chance.
The Tucson-born country singer faced fellow four-chair standout Lillie Kolich during Queen Latifah’s Battle Round on Monday night, creating one of the toughest matchups of The Voice Season 30 so far.
Queen paired the two singers on Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” with legendary singer Patti LaBelle joining rehearsals as Team Queen’s Battle advisor.
Both women had entered the Battles with major expectations.
Kayleigh earned all four chair turns during her Blind Audition with Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name,” ultimately surprising the country coaches by choosing Queen Latifah.
Lillie also entered Team Queen after earning a four-chair turn of her own, meaning Queen had intentionally put two of her most sought-after singers against each other.
The coaches immediately recognized how difficult the decision would be.
Riley Green praised Kayleigh’s huge voice while also highlighting the strength Lillie showed in her lower register.
Kelly Clarkson was even more enthusiastic.
She described their duet as her favorite rendition of “Girl Crush” she had heard and praised Kayleigh’s range and commanding presence.
Kelly admitted that if the choice were hers, she was leaning slightly toward Kayleigh.
Adam Levine saw it differently.
He believed the song naturally suited Kayleigh more, which made Lillie’s ability to rise to the challenge particularly impressive.
Adam said he likely would have selected Lillie for overcoming that disadvantage and still delivering such a strong performance.
That left Queen with the decision she had been dreading.
Queen told both singers that she felt honored simply to have witnessed their performance.
But one tiny vocal moment ultimately helped settle it.
Queen said Lillie delivered one note that sounded so distinctive and special that it convinced her she needed to continue working with her.
She chose Lillie Kolich as the Battle winner, sending her directly into Cut Week.
For Kayleigh, it appeared to be the end.
Then Kelly Clarkson hit her Steal button.
Kelly barely had time to celebrate before Riley Green pressed his own button too.
Suddenly the artist Queen had just eliminated had two coaches fighting to bring her onto their teams.
Kelly immediately reminded Kayleigh who had acted first.
She pointed out that when Kayleigh believed she was going home, Kelly was the first coach to press her Steal, while Riley waited a little longer.
Kelly also leaned heavily on her competition experience, reminding Kayleigh that she knows what it takes to win a singing competition and promising that she could help guide her through the next stage.
Adam Levine even joined Kelly’s campaign.
As Riley tried to make his pitch, Adam jokingly attempted to block the country star from Kayleigh’s view — another chapter in the coaches’ increasingly playful efforts to prevent Riley from landing strong country singers.
But Riley wasn’t giving up.
He reminded Kayleigh that he had been a major supporter during her original four-chair Blind Audition and said he had wanted her on his team from the beginning.
Riley argued that the other coaches didn’t want Kayleigh joining him because they knew the combination could become dangerous later in the competition.
His message was simple: come to Team Riley and try to win The Voice.
That makes Kayleigh’s decision especially interesting because she has already turned Riley down once.
During the Blind Auditions, Riley looked like the obvious choice for a country singer performing Vince Gill.
Instead, Kayleigh followed her instincts and selected Queen Latifah.
Now the circumstances have completely changed.
Queen chose Lillie.
Kayleigh needs a new coach.
And the two people fighting hardest for her are Kelly and Riley — both of whom tried to recruit her the first time around.
But viewers didn’t get the answer Monday night.
The episode ended on a cliffhanger before Kayleigh revealed which Steal she accepted, meaning her new team will be revealed during Tuesday’s Battle episode.
That leaves Kayleigh with a fascinating choice.
Kelly already proved she was willing to act first when Kayleigh was in danger.
Riley can offer the direct country-music experience that seemed like such an obvious match from the beginning.
And after surviving a Battle between two four-chair turns, Kayleigh Mathews suddenly finds herself being fought over all over again.
Queen Latifah may have chosen Lillie Kolich.
But Kayleigh’s Voice story is far from finished.
