Five Arrested After 21-Year-Old Woman Dies During Bungee-Style Jump in Brazil

A 21-year-old woman has died in Brazil after a bungee-style jump from a bridge ended in tragedy, leading to the arrest of several people connected to the activity. Authorities are now investigating whether a major safety failure caused the young woman to fall without the proper equipment attached.

The victim has been identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas. She died on Saturday, June 13, at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo.

According to Brazilian media reports, Maria had booked the experience as part of a guided rope-jump activity at the disused bridge. What was meant to be an adventurous outing instead became the center of a police investigation.

Video from the scene has circulated online, showing Maria being escorted to the edge of the bridge by people involved in the activity. Moments later, witnesses realized something had gone terribly wrong.

People nearby could reportedly be heard shouting after noticing the safety rope had not been properly attached. The video quickly sparked outrage online, with many asking how such a basic safety step could have been missed.

Police reports said Maria fell about 40 meters into the area below the bridge. Emergency responders were called to the scene, including a police helicopter, but she was pronounced dead before she could be rescued.

Maria was a physical education and sports management graduate. Hours before the incident, she had posted lighthearted messages on social media about the jump, showing that she had gone into the experience expecting excitement, not danger.

Her fiancé was reportedly at the scene and became unwell after what happened. Local reports said he needed emergency medical attention as the reality of the incident unfolded.

Authorities confirmed that six people were taken in for questioning after the tragedy. Several men were arrested at the scene, while others were later located after reportedly trying to flee the area.

Police have said the case is being treated seriously, with suspects facing allegations connected to homicide with implied malice. Investigators are focusing on whether the group running the activity failed to follow basic safety procedures.

Officials also said the activity was allegedly being operated by an unregulated group without proper authorization or oversight. That detail has raised even more concern about who was allowed to run extreme activities at the site.

A police official said the death appears to have resulted from a critical safety failure. Investigators are looking closely at how Maria could have been sent from the platform without the correct safety cord secured.

The incident has caused widespread anger on social media, where many users said Maria trusted the operators with her life. Others called the situation an unacceptable failure that should never have happened.

Local authorities in Limeira are also reviewing whether more could have been done to prevent dangerous activities at the bridge. Officials have suggested that legal action could follow over concerns about oversight and safety enforcement at the location.

As the investigation continues, Maria’s death has become a painful warning about the risks of unregulated extreme sports. For her family and loved ones, what remains is the loss of a young woman who expected a moment of adventure and never came home.
