The 26-year-old Meridian, Mississippi native—a beloved PE teacher by day—has become one of American Idol Season 23’s breakout stars. Long before he wowed the judges with a bold Rick James cover that gave Lionel Richie literal goosebumps, Jamal was known to his Crestwood Elementary students as the coach who couldn’t stop singing through the halls.
“I’ve been singing since the age of two,” he shared. “My grandfather and grandmother actually were the ones that knew that I would sing one day. I grew up singing The Temptations.”
Jamal’s soulful performances of Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” and Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart” left both judges and viewers stunned, showcasing not just vocal range but deep emotional resonance. “I figured it might throw some people off,” Jamal said with a grin. “But I knew it would get attention. I want to be the wow factor.”
