The 26-year-old Meridian, Mississippi native—a beloved PE teacher by day—has become one of American Idol Season 23’s breakout stars. Long before he wowed the judges with a bold Rick James cover that gave Lionel Richie literal goosebumps, Jamal was known to his Crestwood Elementary students as the coach who couldn’t stop singing through the halls.
“I’ve been singing since the age of two,” he shared. “My grandfather and grandmother actually were the ones that knew that I would sing one day. I grew up singing The Temptations.”
Jamal’s soulful performances of Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” and Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart” left both judges and viewers stunned, showcasing not just vocal range but deep emotional resonance. Each performance felt like a page from his personal journey—a story of perseverance, passion, and the belief that you can rise above.
“At one point in time, I never thought I was good enough,” he confessed during his audition. “But my community pushed me. I want to bring light to Meridian.”
When it came time to choose his song for the big moment, Jamal got strategic—and a little bold. His showstopping rendition of Rick James’ “Mary Jane” was unexpected, high-risk, and utterly unforgettable.
“I figured it might throw some people off,” Jamal said with a grin. “But I knew it would get attention. I want to be the wow factor.”
That mindset worked. With every note, Jamal not only earned a spot in the Top 24—he earned the nation’s attention.
More than just a singer, Jamal is using his platform to inspire. His story resonates with young people in Meridian and beyond, proving that you can chase your dreams without forgetting where you came from.
“When my students watch this, I hope they see that whatever you put your mind to, you can do anything.”
Jamal’s favorite judge? No surprise—it’s Lionel Richie. “He’s just giving me the energy I need,” Jamal says. And as for Carrie Underwood? He loves her tough love: “She’s like, ‘If you don’t do it, you’re going to go home.’ So I fixed it up and came home with it.”
Whether he’s coaching on the playground or belting out ballads under the spotlight, Jamal Roberts is a force to be reckoned with—and this Idol journey? It’s only just beginning.
