A nurse who rushed to help 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas after a rope jump tragedy in Brazil has revealed the heartbreaking words she spoke while trying to save her. Maria died after falling from the abandoned Skeleton Bridge in São Paulo state during an extreme sports activity that is now under police investigation.
The tragedy happened on Saturday in Limeira, where Maria had gone to take part in a guided rope jump experience. What was supposed to be a moment of excitement ended in disaster after investigators said she was released from the bridge without the safety rope attached to her harness.
Maria fell from a height of about 130 feet. Emergency services were called to the scene, but before official rescue teams could reach her, an off-duty nurse who was nearby made her way down the difficult terrain to help.
The nurse, Rayza Dias, later spoke about the desperate moments after the fall. She said getting to Maria was extremely difficult because the area below the bridge was steep, muddy, and hard to access.
Dias said she scraped her hand while climbing down toward the young woman. She explained that there was only one rope available to help people descend, but she kept going because she knew Maria needed immediate help.

When Dias reached Maria, she said the young woman was still alive. According to the nurse, Maria had a weak pulse and was breathing heavily when she began trying to assist her.
Dias then revealed the emotional words she spoke to Maria in those final moments. She said she has a habit of telling patients, “Nobody dies on my shift,” and repeated that same phrase to Maria, calling her by her nickname, Duda.
The nurse said the moment was especially painful because she was not officially working at the time, but her instinct to help took over. Her words have since touched many people following the case, showing the humanity and urgency of those final minutes.
Local reports said Maria had requested to be launched in an “airplane style” position, with instructors lifting her as she stretched out her arms before the jump. Investigators are now looking at how the activity was prepared and why the most important safety step was missed.
Authorities believe the operators failed to attach the safety rope before Maria was released from the bridge. The three men involved have since been charged with homicide with eventual intent, a legal category used when reckless actions create a foreseeable risk of death.

The suspects have been identified as Maicon Fernandes Cintra, Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, and Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves. Police said two of the men left the area after the incident and were later found in nearby woods with help from a helicopter.
Investigators said the accused men claimed there was a kind of blackout during the preparation process. They reportedly could not clearly explain who was responsible for attaching the rope or why a final safety check was not completed.
The case has also renewed concerns about the Skeleton Bridge itself. The abandoned structure had already been linked to safety warnings after another fatal incident there in 2024.
After that earlier incident, federal authorities reportedly instructed local officials to restrict access and place warning signs near the bridge. Although barriers were installed, people were still able to reach the area through unofficial routes.
Now, as Maria’s family mourns and police continue their investigation, the story has become a painful warning about unregulated extreme sports and the cost of one missed safety check. For many, the words of the nurse who tried to save her will remain one of the most heartbreaking parts of the tragedy.
