John Foster has once again shown why so many country fans connected with his voice on American Idol. The 20-year-old singer recently shared an acoustic cover of Dolly Parton’s beloved “Hard Candy Christmas,” and the response came almost immediately.
Sitting with his acoustic guitar, Foster kept the performance remarkably simple. There was no huge production or elaborate arrangement—just his guitar and the traditional country voice that helped make him the runner-up on American Idol Season 23 in 2025.
For Foster, the song wasn’t a random choice. He revealed that “Hard Candy Christmas” is actually his favorite Christmas song of all time, making his decision to record it especially personal.
Dolly originally recorded “Hard Candy Christmas” for the 1982 film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Although its title makes it sound like a traditional holiday song, Dolly previously explained that its deeper meaning is about enduring difficult times and finding the determination to keep going.
That emotional quality fits Foster’s singing style particularly well. Rather than trying to overpower the song, he delivered it with a restrained, classic-country approach, allowing the melody and story to remain at the center of the performance.
Fans quickly noticed. Within less than 24 hours, Foster’s video had already collected more than 100,000 views, with listeners filling the responses with praise for his rendition.
Some described his performance as beautiful, while others praised how naturally his voice seemed to fit the song. The enthusiastic reaction also sparked the kind of question that inevitably follows a memorable cover of a classic: could this be one of the best versions fans have heard?
Of course, calling any rendition the “best” comes down to personal taste, especially when the original belongs to an artist as iconic as Dolly. It also isn’t the first time Foster has honored Dolly through music. Following her death in August, he shared an emotional performance of one of her signature songs, “I Will Always Love You.” That tribute went on to receive more than 830,000 views.
Foster later found another way to remember her by adding new lyrics to his original song “Tell That Angel I Love Her.” The song originally honored his friends Maggie Dunn and Caroline Gill, who died in a 2022 car crash, but he wrote an additional chorus following Dolly’s passing.
Meanwhile, Foster’s own country career continues to grow after American Idol. He is now an MCA Nashville recording artist, has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and is appearing at Dollywood during its 2026 Harvest Festival.
