It’s been over a week since Jamal Roberts secured his historic win as the Season 23 champion of American Idol, and the waves of celebration haven’t slowed down. From television appearances and interviews to his breakout single “Heal” climbing the charts, Roberts is navigating a whirlwind of newfound fame — all while remaining grounded in the humble roots that helped define his journey.
The 27-year-old P.E. teacher-turned-superstar is soaking in the moment, but there’s one surprising piece of unfinished business: he hasn’t yet received his $250,000 prize. In a candid interview with Us Weekly on May 27, Roberts admitted, “No, I haven’t received it. Don’t know where it is. I’m interested in knowing.” Though he remains lighthearted about the delay, it’s a reminder that even in victory, some details take time to fall into place.
Still, Roberts has a practical plan for the prize when it arrives. “I’m gonna put it in the bank,” he shared, making it clear that his focus remains on long-term stability rather than flashy spending.
This kind of financial structure isn’t new for American Idol winners. Past contestants have opened up about how the prize is often structured more like an advance from a record deal. Season 16 winner Maddie Poppe once explained that winners typically receive half the money upfront and the rest after completing their record — a deal that often comes with recoupment clauses. Despite this, the recognition and platform that come with the title carry just as much weight as the prize itself.
That’s especially true for Roberts, who made history as the first Black male winner of American Idol in over two decades — a milestone that’s resonated deeply with fans across the country. His powerful performance of Tom Odell’s “Heal” in the finale not only earned him the crown but also marked the start of a promising musical chapter.
Beyond the prize money, Roberts and runner-up John Foster have also won a trip for four aboard the Disney Wish cruise, complete with Disney entertainment and a stay at the private island, Castaway Key. But for Roberts, the most important rewards are still close to home.
“All they know is ‘Daddy win,’” Roberts said of his daughters, one of whom is just three weeks old. After his big moment on national television, he celebrated not with glitz but with a hot fish sandwich and precious time with his family in Meridian, Mississippi.
His schedule is quickly filling up. On June 4, Roberts will perform at CMA Fest in Nashville, and later this year, he’s set to headline a special event, “A Night of Soul, Celebration, & Support for Alcorn State Athletics,” on September 19. He’s also teasing a potential collaboration with country artist Jelly Roll — a sign that even bigger things may be on the horizon.
Jamal Roberts is living proof that dreams — no matter how improbable — can come true. And while the cash prize may still be in transit, the respect, recognition, and opportunities already coming his way are priceless.
