Jamal Roberts Brought to Tears Before Hometown Parade — The Touching Reason Why

Just hours before the streets of downtown Charlotte overflow with celebration, American Idol Top 3 finalist Jamal Roberts returned home to a city that’s ready to show just how proud it is.

“This still feels like a dream,” Jamal told Queen City Newsfeed in his first interview since touching down at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. His voice carried a mix of awe and gratitude. “To see my city show up for me like this… I’m still processing it all.”

At 23, the Charlotte native has become a household name thanks to his stirring vocals, magnetic stage presence, and a journey on American Idol that’s been as emotional as it’s been electric. From the moment he landed, Jamal was swept into a flurry of hugs, rehearsals, interviews, and anticipation — all leading up to today’s citywide celebration that includes a parade, a free concert at Romare Bearden Park, and a special proclamation from the mayor.

“It’s overwhelming — in the best way,” he said, flashing that signature smile that’s become familiar to millions. “People I haven’t seen since middle school, teachers, neighbors, even the lady from the barbershop — everybody’s reaching out. I didn’t know the love ran this deep.”

Roberts has delivered some of the season’s most memorable performances, including a soulful, stripped-down rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine” and a jaw-dropping, gospel-powered take on “Take Me to the King.” His authenticity and vulnerability have made him one of the most beloved contestants of Idol’s Season 23. But behind the spotlight, the path hasn’t been without obstacles.

“There were nights I questioned everything,” he admitted. “The pressure, the nerves, the constant rehearsing — it all adds up. But I kept going back to why I started singing in the first place: to move people. That’s always been the mission.”

And he’s done just that. Whether it’s glowing reviews from the judges — Luke Bryan called him “a generational voice,” Katy Perry said he “channels something divine,” and Lionel Richie likened him to a young Marvin Gaye — or the support of fans nationwide, Jamal has struck a chord.

With just one live show left before a winner is crowned, Jamal says he’s choosing to stay grounded in the moment.

“I’m not thinking about the finale yet,” he said. “Right now, it’s about this city, this love, this night. I just want to thank Charlotte for believing in me.”

Tonight’s concert promises more than just fan favorites — Jamal teased emotional tributes and surprise appearances by local artists. One moment in particular will be deeply personal: a special song dedicated to his late grandmother, who he says was the first to believe in his voice.

“She’s the reason I sing with heart,” he said, eyes glistening. “So tonight, I sing for her.”

Looking ahead, Jamal is already dreaming bigger. Once Idol wraps, he hopes to begin recording original music and launching a tour.

“There’s so much I want to say through my own songs,” he shared. “Idol gave me the mic — now it’s my turn to speak through music.”

As Charlotte prepares to cheer him on tonight, one thing is clear: Jamal Roberts may have started as a kid with a dream on the West Side — but now, he’s singing for the world.

“I’m still that same kid,” he said with a smile. “But now, the world is listening.”
