Meridian, Mississippi turned out in full force for its hometown hero on Wednesday, May 14, as over 20,000 fans lined the streets of Downtown to celebrate American Idol finalist Jamal Roberts, who has soared into the Top 3 of Season 23. From emotional reunions to powerhouse performances, the day was filled with moments that echoed just how deeply Roberts’ journey has touched his community—and the country.
A Hometown Hero’s Triumphant Return
The festivities began at 5:30 p.m. with a parade that started at the Lauderdale County Courthouse and ended at City Hall, where fans of all ages gathered to catch a glimpse of the man who has become a local and national favorite. Roberts, beaming with gratitude, waved from his vehicle as supporters cheered, waved signs, and shouted, “We love you, Jamal!”
By 7:15 p.m., the celebration reached its peak with a free outdoor concert on the City Hall lawn. Roberts took the stage with the same magnetic presence that has won over millions on television, delivering what one fan called an “anointed and electric” performance that made clear his star is only beginning to rise.
“He’s a beast on stage,” one local resident said. “His presence is electric, and tonight proved he’s already a star.”
A Heartfelt Return to His Roots
Earlier in the day, Roberts surprised Crestwood Elementary School, where he once walked the halls as a student. What was supposed to be a fifth-grade vs. teacher kickball game turned into a joyous and emotional reunion. Kids screamed, teachers cheered, and Jamal hugged staff members who helped shape his path.
“It’s awesome seeing him come back,” said Crestwood teacher Deyantah Curry. “The kids have been waiting. They tell each other when to vote. Seeing their reactions today was just amazing.”
The moment was just as meaningful for Roberts, who reflected on his previous journey on BET Sunday Best, a gospel competition filmed during COVID-19.
“I really didn’t get much out of that,” he shared. “I got cut loose, but I’m thankful I did—because if that never happened, this never would’ve happened. I’m just grateful for the opportunities and the moment.”
Community Pride and Big Praise from Carrie Underwood
Meridian made sure the celebration matched the magnitude of Roberts’ moment. The Meridian City Council allocated $20,000 to support the event, complete with food vendors, live updates, and clear coordination to welcome the flood of fans.
Roberts’ journey has been especially moving given the recent controversy surrounding comments from Idol judge Carrie Underwood, who previously offered what fans called a “tone-deaf critique.” But during his most recent performance of “Rainbow Connection,” Underwood changed her tune.

“I felt like I had this diamond in the rough standing right in front of me,” she said. “If you ain’t real careful, you might just win this whole thing.”
What’s Next: The Finale
As Roberts heads into the American Idol finale this Sunday, May 18 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC, his hometown is behind him every step of the way.
From touching lives in elementary classrooms to captivating millions on national television, Jamal Roberts has become more than a contestant—he’s a symbol of perseverance, talent, and hometown pride.
