Jamal Roberts Makes American Idol History with Two Unprecedented Records

Congratulations are pouring in for Jamal Roberts, who made history Thursday night by becoming the first Black man in 22 years to win American Idol, following in the footsteps of Ruben Studdard, who won back in Season 2 (2003).

The 27-year-old Mississippi native and P.E. teacher from Meridian triumphed in American Idol Season 23, earning the title after a season of powerhouse performances, raw storytelling, and unwavering humility. His journey from stay-at-home dad and part-time educator to national star inspired millions — and judging by the nearly 26 million votes cast, viewers were all in.

“This is for my girls…”

In an emotional post-win interview, Roberts said his three daughters — Harmoni (6), Lyrik (4), and newborn Gianna — were his “why” through every round of the competition. Gianna was born just days before the finale, making his win even more poignant.

“My girls are everything to me,” Roberts said. “This whole journey, I carried them in my heart every step of the way. I want them to know they can dream big — and that anything is possible.”

From PE Teacher to Idol Star

Before Idol, Roberts served as a physical education teacher — a role he called “rooted in purpose more than a paycheck.”

“I wasn’t really doing the teaching thing for the money,” he shared with USA Today. “It was really the kids. They’re just my inspiration.”

That same authenticity carried him from his unforgettable Idol audition — where he impressed the judges with Rick James’ “Mary Jane” — all the way to the finale stage.

The Final Showdown

During the finale, Roberts, John Foster, and Breanna Nix gave their last performances of the season. After Nix was announced in third place, it came down to Roberts and Foster. Both performed emotional duets and debuted original singles.

Foster delivered a heartfelt rendition of his original, “Tell That Angel That I Love Her.” But it was Roberts’ performance of “Heal” by Tom Odell — reimagined with his soulful touch — that sealed the deal, earning him the $250,000 prize and a recording contract with Hollywood Records/19 Recordings.

A Milestone Moment

Roberts joins an elite group of Black American Idol champions, including Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, Candice Glover, Just Sam, and of course, Ruben Studdard. His win is a cultural milestone and a personal triumph — not just for Roberts, but for many who saw themselves in his story.

In his own words: “I’ve been counted out before. I’ve doubted myself. But this moment reminds me — and hopefully reminds others — that God has the final say. Keep going.”
