Jelly Roll & Brandon Lake’s Gospel Duet Leaves Idol in Tears

Jelly Roll & Brandon Lake

For the first time in its 23-season run, American Idol devoted an entire television special to gospel and faith-inspired music — and it was nothing short of extraordinary.

The special Easter Sunday episode (April 20), titled Songs of Faith, delivered three hours of soul-stirring performances from the remaining contestants, as well as unforgettable guest appearances and musical moments from judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. Also stepping into the spotlight was this season’s artist-in-residence, Jelly Roll, whose presence has brought raw authenticity and deep emotion to the competition.

A Hallelujah Heard ‘Round the Country

The night’s most anticipated performance came from Jelly Roll and Christian worship artist Brandon Lake, who performed their emotional new collaboration, Hard Fought Hallelujah. The duet marked the track’s first television performance, following its Grand Ole Opry debut in February.

“I wanted to share this song with somebody that had a really beautiful and hard-fought story,” Lake said in a K-Love interview. “And the first person that came to mind was Jelly.”

Turns out, the feeling was mutual.

“I’m honored that I was the call,” Jelly Roll said. “I’m a Brandon Lake fan… What he’s doing for Christian music — even outside of Christian music — he’s taking it further than I’ve seen anybody take it in a long time.”

Their performance was a raw, redemptive moment that resonated deeply with viewers, many of whom took to social media to share their praise.

“So awesome to see people praising Jesus on regular TV!” one fan wrote.
“Brandon Lake, you are an amazing singer… Your singing and praising the Lord is genuine.”
“Jelly Roll was shining with the joy of the Lord,” another added.

A Night of Celebration — and Heartbreak

The Songs of Faith special wasn’t just a celebration of spirituality and song — it also marked a pivotal point in the competition. Heading into the episode, 24 contestants remained. But before the first note rang out, four singers were eliminated, leaving 20 to perform inspirational songs that reflected their life journey, beliefs, or personal growth.

Those 20 artists now await America’s vote, knowing the field will narrow again — six more contestants are set to be eliminated Monday night (April 21).

With emotionally rich performances, bold expressions of faith, and game-changing eliminations, American Idol’s gospel special wasn’t just a television milestone — it was a cultural moment.
