Remembering Val Kilmer: A Father, Not Just a Star

Val Kilmer

The world is saying goodbye to a Hollywood legend. Val Kilmer, known for his unforgettable roles in Top Gun, Tombstone, and Batman Forever, passed away on April 1, 2025, at the age of 65.

His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed that he died of pneumonia. The news has sparked an outpouring of love and tributes from fans, friends, and fellow stars—none more touching than the message shared by his children.

“An Extraordinary Father”

Mercedes (33) and Jack Kilmer (28), Val’s two children, released a heartfelt statement just days after his passing.

“Thank you for honoring our extraordinary father’s memory,” they shared, in a message published by PEOPLE. “We are so proud of him and honored to see his legacy celebrated.”

They also asked for privacy as they take time to grieve. “At this time, we would like to grieve privately,” they said.

A Life and Career That Left an Impact

Val Kilmer’s career was nothing short of iconic. Whether he was stealing scenes as the charming “Iceman” in Top Gun or bringing intensity and gravitas to Doc Holliday in Tombstone, Kilmer’s presence on screen was magnetic.

He made his final film appearance in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, where he briefly but powerfully reprised his role as Tom Kazansky. That moment meant as much to his co-stars as it did to fans.

“I was crying,” Tom Cruise admitted during a 2023 interview with Jimmy Kimmel. “He’s such a brilliant actor. I love his work. For him to come back and play that character—it was like he never left.”

Kilmer’s appearance in Maverick was particularly meaningful because of the personal battles he had been facing for years.

A Courageous Fight

In 2015, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer. He endured chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, and two tracheotomies. A procedure on his trachea severely damaged his vocal cords, making it difficult for him to speak. Still, he remained resilient, continuing to create, write, and even produce an acclaimed documentary about his life, Val (2021).

His courage, creativity, and deep passion for the arts never wavered.

A Moment of Silence from Tom Cruise

On April 3 at CinemaCon, Tom Cruise took a moment to reflect on his friend’s passing before addressing the crowd.

“I’d like to take a moment before we get started today to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer,” Cruise said. “I can’t tell you how much I admired his work and him as a human being. I was so grateful and honored that he joined Top Gun and came back for Top Gun: Maverick.”

He then asked the audience to join him in a moment of silence.

“Thank you, Val. I wish you well on your next journey,” Cruise added quietly.

Val Kilmer was more than just a star—he was an artist, a fighter, and a beloved father. As the world continues to celebrate his legacy, our hearts are with Mercedes, Jack, and all those who loved him.

Rest in peace, Val. You’ll always be our Iceman.
