The search for former Alaskan Bush People star Matt Brown has been suspended after authorities announced they are temporarily scaling back active recovery efforts due to dangerous river conditions and a lack of new information.
The development comes after days of intense search operations along the Okanogan River in Washington state. Authorities confirmed that while the investigation remains open, active search efforts have been paused until conditions improve or new information becomes available that could help narrow the search area.
According to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received reports involving a man seen near the river before witnesses allegedly observed him being carried away by the current. Search teams immediately launched an extensive operation involving boats, divers, sonar equipment, personal watercraft, and specialized search personnel.
Despite those efforts, officials reported that no body or definitive evidence was located during the search.
The situation gained national attention after Matt’s brother, Bear Brown, shared emotional videos discussing what witnesses had reportedly told authorities. Bear explained that multiple individuals believed the person involved was his brother, though officials have repeatedly emphasized that no formal identification has been made.
In one of his public statements, Bear acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the situation but admitted he believed there was a strong likelihood that the reports involved Matt.
Authorities later confirmed that a firearm had been recovered from the river near the area where the individual was reportedly last seen. However, investigators have stressed that many details remain under review and that no final conclusions have been announced.
The search operation itself became increasingly difficult as weather conditions worsened. Officials noted that rising water levels, stronger currents, and continued rainfall created hazardous conditions for recovery teams while also expanding the potential search area considerably.
As a result, authorities determined that continuing large-scale recovery efforts was no longer practical under current circumstances.
The news has prompted an outpouring of concern from fans of Alaskan Bush People, many of whom followed Matt’s journey for years on the Discovery Channel series. Matt was one of the original members of the Brown family featured on the show, which documented their unconventional lifestyle and life in remote wilderness settings.
In recent years, however, Matt largely stepped away from the public spotlight.
Bear also addressed speculation surrounding his relationship with his brother, saying that while many people assumed the family had distanced themselves from Matt, the situation was far more complicated. According to Bear, Matt had largely chosen to separate himself from family interactions in recent years while continuing to struggle with personal challenges.
Supporters across social media have since shared messages of sympathy and concern for the Brown family as they wait for further answers.
For now, investigators say the case remains active even though physical search operations have been suspended. Officials have indicated that recovery efforts could resume if conditions improve or if new information emerges that helps focus the investigation.
As the Brown family and fans continue hoping for clarity, many remain focused on supporting one another through an incredibly difficult and uncertain situation.
