Simon Cowell is temporarily stepping away from America’s Got Talent, with lingering problems from the serious electric-bike accident he suffered six years ago now requiring another back procedure.
The 66-year-old judge is expected to miss several weeks of Season 21 filming while he undergoes what his representative has described as routine surgery. The procedure is planned, and Cowell is expected to return to the show once he has recovered.
The update immediately caused concern among longtime viewers, particularly because Cowell’s original 2020 accident was one of the most serious health setbacks of his life.
Importantly, however, this is not the result of a new bike crash. The upcoming procedure is connected to continuing back problems resulting from the electric-bike accident Cowell suffered at his Malibu home in August 2020.
That accident caused major spinal injuries and required extensive surgery at the time.
Cowell later revealed that his recovery was far more difficult than many viewers initially realized. He dealt with lasting nerve problems and spent a considerable period rebuilding his strength before eventually returning to his television work.
The injury even forced him to miss America’s Got Talent live shows in 2020.
Now, six years later, the effects of that same accident are once again interfering with his schedule.
Cowell’s representative has stressed that his latest operation is considered routine, rather than treatment for a sudden new medical emergency. He is expected to be away from the judges’ table for only a few weeks.
Still, his absence comes at a particularly important moment.
America’s Got Talent Season 21 is in the middle of its live competition, when contestants are fighting for places in the later rounds and the judges play a major role in reacting to some of the season’s biggest performances.
Cowell normally sits alongside Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara and Mel B, with Terry Crews hosting the competition.
With Simon temporarily unavailable, producers are reportedly arranging guest judges to fill his chair during at least some of the episodes he misses. Exactly who will appear has not yet been officially confirmed.
That possibility has already created another mystery for viewers.
The show has used celebrity substitutes before, including during Cowell’s original recovery in 2020, when other familiar television personalities stepped in while he was unable to appear.
His current situation therefore carries an unusual sense of history repeating itself.
The 2020 crash first removed Cowell from AGT during its live competition. Six years later, complications connected to that injury are once again forcing him to temporarily surrender the judging seat that has become closely associated with him.
Cowell also experienced another cycling accident in 2022, which resulted in an arm injury, although his current surgery is being linked specifically to his longstanding back problems.
Despite those setbacks, Cowell has repeatedly returned to television and maintained an extremely active schedule.
Along with judging America’s Got Talent, he remains the creator and an executive producer of the franchise, meaning his involvement extends considerably further than simply appearing behind the judges’ desk.
There is also no indication that his current absence represents a permanent departure from the program.
The plan remains for Cowell to recover from the procedure and return within several weeks, making this a temporary medical break rather than a farewell.
For now, however, Season 21 will have to continue without one of its most recognizable personalities.
