Simon Cowell is stepping away from the America’s Got Talent judges’ desk for several weeks, but the reason behind his absence goes back much further than this season.
The 66-year-old television personality is preparing to undergo a planned procedure for continuing back problems stemming from the serious electric-bike accident he suffered in August 2020. His representative has confirmed that Cowell will temporarily miss AGT while recovering, with the expectation that he will return after a few weeks.
The timing is particularly noticeable because Season 21 has reached its live-show stage, traditionally one of the most important periods of the entire competition.
Rather than continuing with Cowell’s chair permanently empty, producers are reportedly arranging celebrity guest judges to join Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara and Mel B during his absence. Exactly who will fill in has not yet been officially announced.
Despite some headlines making the situation sound like a new accident, Cowell has not recently suffered another major crash.
His upcoming surgery is connected to lingering issues from his 2020 accident, when he fell from an electric bike at his Malibu home and badly injured his back. The accident required extensive surgery and forced him to miss America’s Got Talent live shows that year as well.
The injury became one of the most difficult health challenges Cowell had faced.
He later spoke about experiencing lasting nerve problems during his recovery and acknowledged that returning to normal life took considerable time. Six years later, those old injuries are apparently still creating enough discomfort that another procedure has become necessary.
However, those close to the situation have emphasized that the latest procedure is considered routine and planned, rather than evidence that Cowell’s condition has suddenly become significantly worse.
That distinction is important because Cowell’s history of accidents has naturally made fans concerned whenever another medical update emerges.
Two years after his original back injury, Cowell experienced another bike accident in London in 2022 and injured his arm. Even after those experiences, he continued cycling and eventually returned to his demanding television schedule.
His upcoming absence therefore isn’t being presented as retirement or a permanent departure from America’s Got Talent.
Cowell remains one of the central figures behind the franchise, serving not only as a judge but also as its creator and executive producer. He has occupied an AGT judging seat since 2016 and has become inseparable from the show’s identity.
There is also an unusual sense of history repeating itself.
When Cowell suffered his original accident in 2020, he was forced to miss that season’s live episodes while recovering. Guest judges temporarily appeared during his absence before the competition continued with a reduced panel.
Now, six years later, the consequences of that same injury are once again temporarily removing him from the live shows.
The difference this time is that Cowell and his team already know what needs to be done, and current reports indicate that his break should last only several weeks rather than becoming an extended absence.
That leaves viewers with another intriguing question while Cowell recovers: which celebrities will be asked to take over his seat?
With the competition already deep into Season 21, an unexpected rotation of guest judges could dramatically change the atmosphere of the live shows while Cowell is away.
Still, the most reassuring detail for longtime fans is that this isn’t being described as Simon Cowell’s farewell to America’s Got Talent.
He is simply taking time away to deal with an injury that has followed him for six years—and once his recovery is complete, the plan is for Simon to return to the famous judges’ desk once again.
