New details about the final conversation between James ‘Weston’ Higginbotham and his mother have emerged following the heartbreaking discovery of his body in a mountainous area outside Kyoto.
According to his mother, Nancy Higginbotham, the two had a disagreement during their family vacation in Japan over a topic few people would have expected.
Artificial intelligence.
In an interview, Nancy explained that she had occasionally been using ChatGPT to help navigate Japan and plan parts of the family’s trip. Weston, a biosystems engineering student with a strong interest in sustainability and environmental issues, reportedly had concerns about the environmental impact of AI systems and the resources required to operate them.
Nancy said the topic had come up before.
According to her, Weston was passionate about conservation and often expressed concerns about technology’s effect on the environment. During the trip, those concerns led to a disagreement between mother and son.
Shortly afterward, Weston decided to explore on his own.
At first, his movements could still be followed through a location-sharing application used by the family. They reportedly saw him travel by train and visit several locations while moving through the Kyoto area.

Then something happened that immediately raised concern.
His location sharing suddenly stopped.
For Nancy, that moment stood out because she said it was highly unusual for Weston to cut off contact without explanation. The sudden silence left the family worried, especially because they could no longer see where he was going or whether he was safe.
As hours turned into days, concern turned into panic.
Authorities later traced his last known movements to Kyoto’s Yamashina district, an area that provides access to hiking routes, forested trails, and mountainous terrain. Because Weston enjoyed hiking and spending time outdoors, search teams focused much of their effort on those surrounding wilderness areas.
The search quickly became a major operation.
More than 100 officers, search teams, helicopters, and K-9 units reportedly participated in the effort. Difficult weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds, made the search even more challenging as rescuers combed through dense forests and rugged mountain terrain.
Throughout the ordeal, Nancy openly shared her fears.
She worried that Weston may have become injured, lost, or stranded in an area where finding help would be difficult. As the search expanded, the family also hired additional search-and-rescue assistance and received support from volunteers in both Japan and the United States.
Tragically, the search ended with the discovery of Weston’s body by a volunteer rescue group in a mountainous area outside Kyoto.
In a statement afterward, Nancy described the family’s grief as impossible to put into words and thanked the countless people who helped search for her son and supported the family during the difficult days that followed.
While details about Weston’s final hours continue to attract public attention, many questions remain unanswered.
Authorities have not publicly released a cause of death, and investigators have not fully explained the circumstances surrounding what happened after his final known movements.
For now, friends and family are remembering Weston not for the mystery surrounding his disappearance, but for the life he lived.
A young man who cared deeply about nature.
A student passionate about sustainability.
A son and brother whose loss has left a family forever changed.
And as loved ones continue to mourn, they are asking for privacy while navigating a grief that no family should ever have to endure. 💔
