Outrage continues to grow in Georgia after a family’s beloved miniature donkey, HeeHaw, was fatally shot during a nighttime search for a missing 12-year-old girl. The incident has sparked intense debate, particularly after the animal’s owner gave an account that sharply differs from the way the encounter was described by the officer involved.
HeeHaw was a one-year-old miniature donkey owned by Hannah Israel and her family. Israel said she had bottle-raised him from a very young age and described him as exceptionally social and accustomed to being around both children and adults.
According to the police report, Cedartown Officer Trenton Garner was assisting with the search when officers and K-9 teams followed a trail into a pasture. Garner reported that HeeHaw moved toward the group and that an attempt to deter the donkey with a Taser did not stop the animal before Garner fired a single shot.
Israel disputes the characterization of HeeHaw as an aggressive animal. She said he regularly participated in petting zoos and was comfortable around people, making the circumstances of the encounter especially difficult for her family to understand.
The owner has also questioned why the donkey was considered such a serious threat. In interviews with local media, Israel said HeeHaw was highly socialized and even treated people as part of his family. She has called for greater transparency about exactly what happened that night.
The controversy has intensified because officials have acknowledged that body-camera footage exists. Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome said he had viewed the footage but declined to publicly characterize what it showed while the matter was being investigated by state authorities.
