“The Voice” is returning for its milestone 30th season on September 21, but longtime viewers will discover that one familiar part of the show is missing. The competition’s standalone official mobile app has been discontinued ahead of the new season.
For years, “The Voice Official App” gave fans a way to interact with the competition while watching episodes. Instead of simply following the Coaches’ decisions, viewers could play along and create their own experience from home.
One of its most popular features allowed fans to virtually turn their chairs during the Blind Auditions. Viewers could decide which Artists they would choose before discovering whether Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson or the other Coaches agreed with them.
Fans could also build fantasy teams made up of their favorite Artists. As contestants advanced or were eliminated, viewers could follow the progress of their personal teams throughout the season.
The app offered several other interactive features as well, including polls, trivia, performance-related content and opportunities to participate while episodes were airing. For dedicated fans, it effectively became a second screen to use alongside the television broadcast.
That experience will not return for Season 30. The standalone app has disappeared from the major mobile app stores, and reports indicate that people who previously installed it will no longer be able to use its interactive features as they did in earlier seasons.
The change has caused disappointment among some longtime viewers, particularly those who enjoyed building teams and pretending to be a Coach during the Blind Auditions. The feature had become part of their regular viewing routine over multiple seasons.
What makes the situation more confusing is that references to the app reportedly remained on some official “Voice” material even after it became unavailable. NBC has not provided a detailed public explanation for why the standalone app was discontinued.
However, removing the app does not mean Season 30 is eliminating fan participation altogether. In fact, the upcoming season is introducing major changes designed to give viewers a more immediate role once the competition reaches its Live Shows.
Season 30 will feature six weeks of live competition, and fans will have new ways to vote for their favorite Artists. SMS text messaging and TikTok will be used for voting, replacing some of the interaction viewers previously associated with the dedicated app.
The season is also moving toward real-time results. Live performances will eventually be followed by voting and results during the same broadcast, while the Live Shows are set to be available simultaneously on NBC and Peacock across U.S. time zones.
So while Season 30 is adding new Coaches, new voting methods, a First-In Button, Cut Week and an expanded live portion, it is also saying goodbye to a feature many fans had grown accustomed to using. When Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green take their red chairs for the September 21 premiere, viewers can still play an important role in the competition—but the familiar official app will no longer be part of the experience.
