They Said He Couldn’t Do It — Now Jamal Roberts Is One Song Away from Becoming the Next American Idol

Jamal Roberts

As the American Idol Season 23 finale approaches on May 18, fans everywhere are watching closely. With the top three finalists — Breanna Nix, John Foster, and Jamal Roberts — ready to give it their all, it’s Jamal’s journey that’s truly capturing hearts across the country.

A Voice That Almost Didn’t Get Heard

Jamal Roberts, 27, from Meridian, Mississippi, is more than just a contestant — he’s a story of determination. By day, he’s a P.E. teacher and father of three. By night, he’s been chasing a music dream that started in his local church.

His smooth, soulful voice first wowed judges with a powerful cover of Rick James’ “Mary Jane.” But what viewers may not know is that this season marks Jamal’s third try at American Idol.

In an interview with Billboard, Jamal revealed he had auditioned twice before. The first time, he was told he was too young and needed more vocal training. The second time, he came unprepared. But giving up? Not in his nature.

“I didn’t get defeated,” he said. “I took the no. I’ve always been able to take constructive criticism and come back stronger.”

And come back he did — now standing proudly in the top 3, proving that perseverance pays off.

Faith, Family, and the Power of Music

Jamal’s musical roots run deep. Raised in a faith-filled family, he began singing at age two. With a bishop grandfather and a deacon on the other side, the church became his stage long before Idol.

“I sang in the choir, played drums, ushered — if the church doors were open, I was there,” he said.

That early experience shaped his passion and taught him the value of hard work and heart.

Between his early auditions and now, Jamal’s life changed in big ways. He became a father to three daughters, including a newborn who arrived just before he reached the Top 7.

Even before Idol, he released a single in 2020 and kept building his sound and story independently.

After making it into the final three, Jamal took to Instagram to show his gratitude:

“THANK YOU GOD!! Thank you, America!! Thank you, MeridianⓂ️! Thank you, American Idol! 😭🙏🏾”

Don’t Miss the Moment

Jamal’s road to the finale hasn’t been easy — but it’s been inspiring. From church pews to the national stage, he’s shown that persistence, passion, and a whole lot of faith can take you far.
