Evan James needed only one performance to become one of the most interesting new country singers on The Voice Season 30.
The 22-year-old Michigan singer stepped onto the Blind Auditions stage with Morgan Wallen’s “Wasted on You” and managed something that looked increasingly unlikely as the performance began.
For much of the song, nobody turned.
Then, almost simultaneously, Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green and Adam Levine hit their buttons, giving Evan a dramatic three-chair turn near the end of his audition. Queen Latifah was the only coach who didn’t turn.
But the coaches weren’t simply impressed because Evan had chosen a recognizable country hit.
Kelly said he had changed the song enough to make it feel like his own, hearing elements of Rascal Flatts singer Gary LeVox along with an R&B influence in Evan’s delivery.
Riley Green noticed something different.
He admitted that he had waited because the beginning hadn’t completely convinced him, but said Evan increasingly opened up vocally until he finally seemed to own the performance.
With Riley sitting in one of the coaches’ chairs, the obvious assumption was that another promising country singer was headed directly to Team Riley.
Evan had other plans.
Adam Levine pointed out that Riley already had several country artists while Evan would occupy a much more distinctive position on his own team.
Evan called the decision a “leap of faith” and selected Team Adam.
The choice visibly surprised the coaches — including Adam himself.
So who exactly is Evan James?
His full name is Evan James Ward, and he comes from Highland, Michigan.
Long before appearing on national television, Evan grew up in surroundings that sound almost designed for a country song.
His family has operated a Christmas-tree farm on the same property for an extraordinary 177 years.
Evan described his life there during the holidays as being almost like a Hallmark movie, complete with his grandfather portraying Santa Claus and family members occasionally dressing as elves.
Music has been another constant in his life.
Evan participated in musical theater and choir competitions while growing up, performed with a church worship band and later became a worship leader himself.
He attended Hartland High School, where he was one of two students selected to perform the national anthem at graduation.
He’s also pursuing a path outside music.
Evan attends Michigan State University, where he studies public relations.
At the same time, he has spent the last few years steadily turning music from a longtime passion into something more serious.
An artist biography says Evan began focusing on country music in 2024, performing at bars and restaurants around his hometown before developing a larger following around Michigan State and on social media.
He has since performed live with his band and appeared at Michigan events, while building an online audience through country covers and other performances.
Before The Voice, Evan already had more than 22,000 TikTok followers, with covers of artists including Chris Stapleton and Zach Bryan helping introduce his voice to listeners online.
And his ambitions go well beyond simply appearing on television.
Evan has described himself publicly as an aspiring Nashville recording artist and has made it clear that he wants to pursue country music professionally.
Interestingly, the artist whose song he chose for his Blind Audition represents something close to the career path Evan dreams about.
Morgan Wallen competed on The Voice years before becoming one of country music’s biggest stars.
Evan openly acknowledged that connection before his own audition.
He said he hopes his career can eventually move in the same direction Wallen’s did after The Voice, adding that for now, he can only dream about where the opportunity might lead.
There is another interesting connection.
Wallen eventually spent part of his own Voice run on Team Adam Levine.
Now Evan has performed a Wallen song, surprised everyone by passing on country coach Riley Green and chosen Adam as well.
That doesn’t guarantee Evan the same future.
But his decision does give him something Adam emphasized during the Blind Audition: a chance to stand apart rather than simply becoming another country singer on a country-heavy team.
Evan James arrived on The Voice as a college student from a Michigan Christmas-tree farm who had spent several years quietly building a local music career.
One three-chair turn later, considerably more people know his name.
And regardless of how far Team Adam takes him in Season 30, Evan has already made his bigger goal clear:
The Voice isn’t supposed to be the destination.
He wants it to be the beginning.
