Kayleigh Mathews entered The Voice Season 30 as one of the most wanted singers of the Blind Auditions.
Now, just one round later, the Tucson country singer suddenly found herself fighting to stay in the competition — only for two coaches to immediately offer her another chance.
The dramatic moment came during the first full night of the Battle Rounds when Queen Latifah paired Kayleigh against fellow four-chair turn Lillie Kolich.
That alone made the matchup unusually difficult.
Both singers had convinced Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Riley Green and Queen Latifah to turn during their Blind Auditions, meaning Queen was guaranteed to risk losing one of her strongest recruits.
For the Battle, Kayleigh and Lillie were given Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush.”
They prepared the song with Queen and legendary guest advisor Patti LaBelle, who encouraged both singers to stop worrying about competing with each other and simply give everything they had.
Queen saw different strengths in each artist.
Kayleigh brought what she described as a spiritual quality, while Lillie offered a distinctive style and confidence that made her voice immediately recognizable.
The performance only made Queen’s decision harder.
Kelly told the singers she had heard “Girl Crush” performed countless times but considered their version her favorite.
Riley also sympathized with Queen, joking that this was the price she had to pay for winning so many highly sought-after artists during the Blind Auditions.
But Queen still had to choose.

After praising both singers, she selected Lillie Kolich as the Battle winner, saying there was something especially unique about her.
For a few seconds, that meant Kayleigh appeared to be eliminated.
Then Kelly Clarkson hit her button.
Before Kayleigh could even finish saying goodbye to Queen, Kelly activated her Steal and made it clear she wanted the country singer on Team Kelly.
Kelly had already been a major Kayleigh supporter during the Blind Auditions.
When Kayleigh originally performed Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name,” Kelly praised the emotion and country influences in her voice and told her she was already a fan.
But Kayleigh surprised everyone by choosing Queen Latifah instead.
Now Kelly suddenly had another opportunity.

She jokingly brushed aside Kayleigh’s goodbye to Queen and immediately began trying to convince her to switch teams.
Kelly reminded Kayleigh that she understands competition firsthand and confidently told her she knew how to help someone navigate a show like The Voice.
But Kelly wasn’t alone for long.
Riley Green hit his Steal button too.
That immediately transformed Kayleigh’s apparent elimination into another coach battle.
And Riley’s pitch was very different.
Rather than giving Kayleigh a long speech, Riley confidently suggested there was a reason the other coaches didn’t want her joining his team: they believed the two of them could win together.
The moment also created an interesting full-circle situation.
During Kayleigh’s Blind Audition, Riley had seemed like the most obvious choice.
She is a traditional country singer, and Riley told her that her Vince Gill performance reminded him of growing up in Alabama.
Yet Kayleigh followed her instincts and chose Queen Latifah instead.
Queen had promised to help Kayleigh explore the soul and emotional depth in her country sound rather than placing her into one musical box.
That gamble worked well enough to get Kayleigh to the Battles.
But Queen’s decision to keep Lillie suddenly left Riley with a second chance to land the country singer he had wanted from the beginning.

Kelly, meanwhile, may now be an even more serious threat.
She has repeatedly shown that she understands country music despite not being the season’s designated country coach, and she has years of experience helping contestants navigate The Voice.
That left Kayleigh with perhaps an even harder choice than she faced during the Blinds.
Team Kelly or Team Riley?
NBC didn’t reveal the answer before the episode ended.
Instead, the show turned Kayleigh’s double Steal into a cliffhanger, saving her final coach decision for the next Battle episode.
So Kayleigh Mathews went from four chairs turning during her Blind Audition…
to losing her first Battle…
to suddenly having two superstar coaches fighting over her again.
Queen Latifah may have chosen Lillie Kolich.
But Kayleigh’s Voice journey is far from over.
Now the question is whether she finally chooses the country coach who wanted her from the beginning — Riley Green — or takes her second chance with Kelly Clarkson.
