With just one week to go before the American Idol Season 23 finale, receiving a boost from any judge can be a career-defining moment—but for finalist John Foster, Monday night brought something even more significant: a heartfelt endorsement from Carrie Underwood, one of the show’s most successful alumni.
Underwood, who won Season 4 and went on to become a country music superstar, didn’t just compliment Foster’s performance—she all but predicted his victory.
“I felt like I had this diamond in the rough standing right in front of me,” she said, recalling Foster’s original audition. “I had to do a little convincing on my fellow judges, but I love that you’re standing here right now, proving me right. And I’m going to tell you right now, if you ain’t real careful, you might just win this whole thing.”
Foster, an 18-year-old from Addis, Louisiana, delivered two performances for Disney Night: a charming rendition of “The Bare Necessities” from The Jungle Book, followed by a moving cover of “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie. He chose the latter in tribute to one of his personal musical heroes.
“When I listen to this song, I think about all the dreams that I’ve had as a child,” Foster said. “And the fact that some of these dreams have now come true, and I’m on American Idol in the Top 5, is just an ode to the importance of dreaming.”
The judges were unanimous in their praise. Lionel Richie emphasized Foster’s unique vocal signature:
“I am totally in love with the timbre of your voice. I call it ‘instant identity.’ I know that’s you on your first note. That’s what makes an artist.”
Luke Bryan added, “At this point we’ve seen you go all over the map. It was authentically you and a great job on that.”
The audience and judges alike were captivated by Foster’s authenticity and emotional delivery—qualities that have helped him quietly become a fan favorite throughout the season.
At the end of the episode, the Top 3 finalists were announced: John Foster, Jamal Roberts, and Breanna Nix. Meanwhile, Slater Nalley and Thunderstorm Artis were eliminated from the competition.
As the countdown to the May 18 finale continues, Foster carries not just momentum—but a ringing endorsement from one of the show’s greatest champions. Whether he takes the crown remains to be seen, but Carrie Underwood’s declaration has already solidified his place as one to watch.
