Dolly Parton’s family is grieving an especially painful period after losing two members of the Parton family little more than a month apart.
The country music legend passed away on August 25, 2026, at age 80, following a brief battle with cancer. But only weeks earlier, the family had already been mourning the loss of Dolly’s older brother, Coy “Denver” Parton.
Denver died on July 23 at age 82, meaning his passing came just 33 days before Dolly’s.
His de@th was confirmed through an obituary released by his family. A cause of de@th for Denver was not publicly disclosed.
Unlike his internationally famous sister, Denver spent most of his life outside the entertainment spotlight.
He worked as a crane operator and followed another of his brothers into construction, helping build bridges during his career. He was also remembered as a homestead farmer and someone who enjoyed spending much of his life close to the land.
Denver was one of the 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton and Avie Lee Owens Parton, the large Tennessee family whose upbringing would later inspire so much of Dolly’s music.
Dolly frequently spoke about those childhood years throughout her career.
Although the family had very little money, she remembered their home as being filled with music, stories and an unusually strong sense of togetherness. Those memories eventually appeared in songs including “Coat of Many Colors” and became an essential part of the public story surrounding Dolly’s rise from rural Tennessee to worldwide fame.
Denver chose a much quieter path.
Rather than pursuing music professionally, he built his own life away from celebrity. His obituary remembered his work, farming and devotion to his family rather than any connection to Hollywood or Nashville fame.
His passing on July 23 therefore marked another difficult loss for the surviving Parton siblings.
Then came an even more devastating announcement.
On August 25, Dolly’s nephew Bryan Seaver announced that Dolly had passed away in Nashville. Her team later confirmed that she had been dealing with cancer and that her battle with the illness had been brief.
The timing makes the losses especially painful for the family.
They had barely had a month to process Denver’s passing before losing Dolly, whose enormous public profile meant the family suddenly had to grieve while tributes poured in from around the world.
And Dolly herself had already endured another major family loss not long before.
Her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, passed away in March 2025 at age 82. Dolly later acknowledged how deeply his loss affected her and said she had neglected some of her own health needs while caring for him.
That means the final period of Dolly’s life included considerable personal grief even as she continued working and planning future projects.
Only days before her passing, she was still speaking optimistically about what she hoped to accomplish next, making her sudden de@th particularly difficult for those who believed she still had more chapters ahead.
For fans, Dolly Parton’s passing represents the loss of one of country music’s defining figures.
For her surviving brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and extended family, however, it is something much more personal—and it arrived almost immediately after another goodbye.
