EVAN JAMES WOWS THE COACHES — Morgan Wallen Cover Earns Three-Chair Turn Before Surprise Team Choice

Evan James walked into one of the final Blind Auditions of The Voice Season 30 hoping to follow a path once taken by the artist whose song he was about to perform.

The 22-year-old singer from Highland, Michigan, chose Morgan Wallen’s “Wasted on You,” noting that Wallen himself once competed on The Voice before going on to build a major country career.

Evan hoped the show could become a similar launching point for him.

His performance began with a deep, controlled country vocal, but it was when he reached the chorus that everything changed.

Kelly Clarkson pressed her button first.

Riley Green and Adam Levine quickly followed, giving Evan an impressive three-chair turn. Queen Latifah was unable to turn because her team had already been completed earlier in the episode.

Kelly immediately praised Evan for doing something important with such a recognizable song — making it sound like his own.

She particularly liked the R&B influence he brought into the country hit, telling him that his choices helped separate his version from Morgan Wallen’s original.

Kelly also made her intentions clear, telling Evan that she believed he deserved to be on the show and that she wanted him on her team.

Riley had a slightly different reaction.

The country star admitted that Evan seemed a little nervous at the beginning of the performance and took some time to completely settle into the song.

But once Evan found his groove, Riley believed the performance became significantly stronger.

He praised the soul in Evan’s voice and said he admired how quickly the young singer managed to build momentum within the short time allowed for a Blind Audition.

Then Adam Levine made perhaps the smartest pitch of the three.

Adam joked about once again finding himself fighting for a country singer, even though country artists don’t usually end up on his team.

But he quickly turned that apparent disadvantage into his biggest selling point.

Adam reminded Evan that both Riley and Kelly already had multiple country singers on their teams.

On Team Adam, however, Evan could occupy a very different position.

Rather than competing for attention among several artists with similar styles, Adam argued that Evan could become the country voice who immediately stood out on his roster.

That argument clearly connected.

When it was time to choose, Evan admitted he was ready to “take a leap of faith.”

He chose Team Adam.

The decision gave Adam exactly what he had been searching for late in the Blind Auditions — a strong country singer with enough soul and crossover influence to potentially move beyond one genre.

Evan also arrives on The Voice with plenty of experience behind him.

He has performed extensively as a country singer-songwriter and guitarist and has built a growing following online through covers of artists including Chris Stapleton and Zach Bryan.

His musical background also includes theater, choir competitions and performing with his church worship band before beginning to pursue country music more seriously.

Now he enters the Battles with an unusual advantage.

Riley may have the strongest direct connection to modern country music, and Kelly has repeatedly proven she can coach across genres.

And after three chairs turned for his version of “Wasted on You,” Evan James now has the chance to prove that taking that unexpected route was the right move.

But Adam convinced Evan that being different from everyone else on his team could ultimately be more valuable than choosing the most obvious coach.
