FIRST MISTAKE? — Fans Question Riley Green’s Battle Choice After Caroline Alexis and Everett Bounds Turn Real-Life Chemistry Into a Country Duet

Riley Green’s first full night of The Voice Battle Rounds gave him another painful decision — but this time, some viewers weren’t convinced his approach helped determine who was actually the stronger singer.

Team Riley contestants Caroline Alexis and Everett Bounds were paired together for a throwback country duet of Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn’s “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”

But this wasn’t an ordinary Battle pairing.

Before rehearsals even began, Caroline and Everett revealed that something had developed between them away from the cameras.

The two singers met during the Blind Auditions, and Everett later made the first move.

He sent Caroline flowers along with an invitation to go out, and the two had already been on several dates by the time they walked into rehearsal together.

That immediately caught Riley’s attention.

With country star Carly Pearce helping him advise Team Riley, the coaches realized they had something most Battle partners don’t naturally possess:

real-life chemistry.

Riley and Carly encouraged Caroline and Everett to lean into that connection and make the audience believe the playful back-and-forth in the song.

In other words, they were told not to be afraid to flirt.

And once they reached the stage, they absolutely committed to it.

Caroline and Everett smiled at each other, interacted throughout the duet and played into the classic male-female storytelling style associated with the Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn original.

Kelly Clarkson immediately appreciated the old-school country feel.

She called the performance fun and praised Caroline’s tone, describing her delivery as sweet, sensual and story-driven.

Kelly also praised Everett for opening up vocally and showing more range, ultimately calling the matchup extremely even.

Adam Levine admitted the traditional country song was far outside his usual musical world.

Even so, he thought both artists performed well and said that if Riley forced him to choose, he would probably lean slightly toward Everett.

Then the decision returned to Riley.

He praised Caroline for bringing exactly the sass and attitude he wanted from the song.

But when discussing Everett, Riley emphasized how naturally he fit this style of country performance.

Riley ultimately chose Everett Bounds as the Battle winner.

Caroline was eliminated.

And that’s where some of the criticism began.

One recurring complaint wasn’t necessarily that Everett performed badly.

Instead, critics questioned whether Riley had chosen a song and performance concept that made it difficult to truly compare their individual voices.

A review of the Battle described the chemistry as feeling “forced and hokey” and argued that while both singers hit the notes, the performance itself failed to create a standout vocal moment.

Another Voice recap went even further and argued that Riley “got it wrong.”

That writer preferred Caroline’s country twang and stage presence and questioned whether “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” was a good song choice if the actual goal was determining who had the stronger voice.

That criticism points to the awkward situation Riley created for himself.

By emphasizing their romantic chemistry, the Battle became almost as much about whether Caroline and Everett could sell themselves as a convincing country duet as it was about which contestant deserved to move forward alone.

And Riley’s final explanation may have reinforced that concern.

He said Everett was especially natural in a fun, upbeat, traditional-country setting and added that this was something he felt his team needed moving forward.

So Riley wasn’t necessarily choosing only the strongest vocal performance.

He was also thinking strategically about the kind of artist missing from his remaining team.

That is perfectly allowed on The Voice.

Coaches routinely make decisions based on tone, versatility, uniqueness and what they believe they will need later in the competition.

But for viewers who thought Caroline’s distinctive country sound stood out more, it still felt like a missed opportunity.

The result also created an unusual ending to Caroline and Everett’s story on the show.

They entered rehearsal as two contestants who had started dating.

They were told to use that chemistry against each other in a Battle.

Then Everett advanced while Caroline was sent home.

Their relationship status beyond the show remains a separate question, but as competitors, their paths have officially split.

Everett now moves forward toward Cut Week on Team Riley.

Caroline’s Season 30 journey is over.

And after Riley’s earlier controversial decision to advance Ferryn & Brinkley over Brandy Neelly, his Battle choices are already becoming some of the most debated of the season.

Was choosing Everett actually Riley Green’s first major mistake?

That remains a matter of opinion.

But one criticism surrounding this Battle is difficult to ignore:

When the romance becomes one of the biggest parts of the performance, deciding who actually sang better becomes a lot more complicated.
