“I Never Saw This Coming”: John Foster on His Rocket Ride to Fame as an “American Idol” Finalist

John Foster

At just 18 years old, LSU student John Foster is experiencing the kind of whirlwind most musicians only dream about — and he’s handling it with humility, faith, and a healthy dose of disbelief.

As one of the final three contestants on American Idol Season 22, Foster is on the cusp of winning it all this Sunday, May 18. But win or not, he’s already seeing life-changing success — and he’s not taking it for granted.

Staying Grounded Amid Sudden Fame

In a candid interview with The Advocate, Foster reflected on the whirlwind of national fame and how he’s staying rooted in the things that matter most.

“I’ve just kind of had to make sure that I’m staying centered on myself and my faith and knowing that I have a purpose here and that’s why I’m here,” he said. “And that’s what’s keeping me straight and that’s all I can do.”

Despite his growing confidence on stage and online, Foster insists his values and faith are keeping him steady.

A Hero’s Welcome in Louisiana

Back home, the celebration is already in full swing. Foster received a parade and pep rally in his Louisiana hometown, according to WBRZ-TV. Locals say his talent has been obvious since long before TV audiences discovered him.

From 5,000 to 200,000 Followers — In Two Months

Foster may not have a record deal yet, but his Idol journey has already skyrocketed his career.

“Somebody said one time that ‘American Idol’ is rocket fuel, and I think that’s a perfect analogy,” he told The Advocate. “It’s been literal rocket fuel. I went from 5,000 to 200,000 followers on Facebook in two months — which is absolutely incredible.”

And the recognition is spreading far beyond Louisiana.

Recognized at Disneyland, DMed by a Country Legend

One of the most surreal moments for Foster? Getting recognized at Disneyland.

“I never in a million years thought I’d be recognized there. Louisiana or Texas? Sure. But not Disneyland in California — and sure enough, multiple people came up to me. It was crazy,” he said.

But the most jaw-dropping moment might’ve been seeing a familiar country music name pop up in his notifications.

“Randy Travis followed me on Instagram and sent me a very nice message,” Foster said. “My heart went to my toes when I saw that notification.”

Foster double-checked the account, just in case it was one of the many impersonators that have popped up since his rise to fame — but it was the real Randy Travis.

“That was really awesome,” he said.

What’s Next for John Foster?

With his confidence soaring, a growing fanbase, and the support of country music royalty, John Foster is already well on his way — no matter the outcome of Sunday night’s finale.

“American Idol” wraps up May 18 on ABC — and whether Foster wins or not, one thing’s clear: this is just the beginning.
