Kelly Clarkson’s dispute with a Brooklyn store has taken another dramatic turn after the singer publicly challenged the business’s version of what happened during her visit.
The disagreement began after Clarkson said she traveled to Brooklyn to visit Art of Play, a specialty store selling games, puzzles, toys and unusual decorative items.
According to Kelly, she arrived already interested in purchasing several things but was left stunned by the way she says one employee treated her.
Clarkson claimed she asked about a mechanical singing bird displayed inside the shop and was made to feel as though the employee assumed she could not afford it.
She compared the experience to the famous shopping scene in Pretty Woman, in which Julia Roberts’ character is judged by store employees based on her appearance.
Kelly said the employee looked her over before explaining that the item cost $15,000 and offering to find her something “comparable.”
She interpreted the comment as condescending and later blasted the experience online, saying the employee had lost what could have been a major sale.

THE STORE TELLS A VERY DIFFERENT STORY
After Kelly’s comments began spreading online, Art of Play responded publicly.
The store identified the item as Molly, a one-of-a-kind mechanical bird that sings, dances and moves when operated.
But according to the business, there was one major problem with Kelly’s account.
They said Molly wasn’t actually for sale.
Art of Play explained that the bird is permanently attached to the wall and plays an important role in magic shows hosted inside the shop.
The business also said it was shocked by the amount of online criticism it received following Kelly’s post and emphasized that it wants everyone visiting the store to feel welcome.
That explanation might have ended the disagreement.
Instead, it caused Kelly to respond again.
KELLY SAYS THE STORY CHANGED
Clarkson strongly disputed the store’s claim that Molly was never available for purchase.
She said that when she asked whether the bird was for sale, she was standing directly beside a visible price tag identifying the item as a “Singing Bird.”
According to Kelly, the employee specifically told her that it was available but cost $15,000.
She says that was immediately followed by the offer to find her something comparable.
Kelly then shared an image that appeared to show a price display beside the bird, directly challenging the store’s explanation that the item wasn’t for sale.
That is when her response became considerably sharper.
Clarkson accused the business of being dishonest about what happened and said its new explanation contradicted the conversation she remembers having inside the store.
KELLY DEFENDS CALLING OUT A SMALL BUSINESS
The situation also triggered another debate online.
Some people questioned whether a celebrity with millions of followers should publicly identify a small business after one negative interaction, particularly after the store began receiving harsh online criticism.
Kelly addressed that argument directly.
She said she regularly supports small businesses — pointing out that visiting Art of Play and planning to spend money there was itself evidence of that support.
But she argued that being a small business doesn’t give someone permission to treat customers poorly.
Clarkson also said publicly criticizing businesses isn’t something she normally does, explaining that this particular interaction was an exception because of how strongly it affected her.

THE STORE IS STANDING BY ITS VERSION
Art of Play has not accepted Kelly’s characterization of the encounter.
The business has continued maintaining that Molly is a permanent fixture rather than an item normally available for sale.
It has also reposted supportive comments from customers defending the store and sharing positive experiences they say they have had there.
That has created two sharply different versions of the same encounter.
The store says Kelly misunderstood a conversation about an item that wasn’t available.
Kelly says there was no misunderstanding at all — because she claims the employee explicitly told her the bird was for sale for $15,000.
And the visible price tag has now become a central part of that disagreement. (Us)
THE DISPUTE ISN’T OVER YET
What began as a celebrity sharing an uncomfortable shopping experience has now turned into a very public argument over exactly what was said inside the Brooklyn store.
Neither side appears ready to back down.
Art of Play says Molly wasn’t for sale.
Kelly says she was directly told the opposite.
And after producing what she says is photographic evidence of a $15,000 price tag, Clarkson is now accusing the business not only of treating her poorly — but of changing its story afterward.
For now, the one thing both sides agree on is that Kelly asked about the unusual mechanical bird.
Everything that happened after that remains very much in dispute.
