John Foster’s cowboy hat has become more than just a signature look—it’s a symbol of his journey. As one of the American Idol Season 23 finalists, fans have come to expect the hat as part of his on-stage identity. And according to John, it’s not going anywhere.
“My hat stays on always,” he told The Advocate. “I don’t usually wear it much offstage, but when I’m performing, that hat’s been with me since day one—three years this July. Every show, every gig, it’s been on my head. No way I’m stepping on that finale stage without it.”

But the story behind the hat goes deeper than tradition. In a heartfelt video posted ahead of the finale, John shared the unexpected moment it entered his life—and why it means so much.
“Hey y’all, it’s John Foster,” he began. “I’ve seen a few folks out there who aren’t fans of my hat, so I figured I’d tell you the story behind it.”
It all started in Gruene, Texas, during a casual stop at an antique store. While browsing, John accidentally bumped his head on something hanging from the ceiling: an old Atwood cowboy hat. Curious, he gave it a shot.
“I thought, ‘Let me just try it on—see if it fits my weird head shape.’ And lo and behold, it fit perfectly,” he recalled. “I figured, well, by God, maybe this is a sign. So I bought it—and I’ve worn it at every show since.”
Though the hat’s a bit weathered, John says that’s exactly what gives it character. “It looks beat up because it’s lived through so many performances. And yeah, some people don’t like it, but sorry about you. I’m not opposed to wearing a new one someday—but right now, this is my hat.”
More than just an accessory, the cowboy hat represents John’s authenticity and dedication to his roots—qualities that have earned him a loyal fanbase as he heads into the final round of American Idol.
Along with the fame has come a fair share of rumors—ones John didn’t shy away from addressing. Speaking with The Advocate, he clarified that despite speculation, he hasn’t signed any record deals yet. “I am not signed to or affiliated with any record label whatsoever,” he said firmly.
He also cleared up misinformation about his original song “Tell That Angel I Love Her.” While the touching tribute—written for his late friend Maggie Dunn, who tragically passed in 2022—did chart on iTunes, John confirmed it did not reach No. 1. The emotional performance, aired during the Easter episode, brought John to tears and deeply resonated with viewers.
As the finale approaches, John Foster continues to connect with fans not just through music, but through honesty and heart. With fellow finalists Jamal Roberts and Breanna Nix, he’ll take the stage one last time on May 18, hoping to earn America’s vote—and perhaps a win.
“Thank you all for the support,” John said in a message to his fans. “God bless you, and make sure to tune in to the finale this Sunday!”
The American Idol Season 23 Finale airs Sunday, May 18 at 8/7c on ABC.
